So what's the best method to do this? I tried creating a diffuse map in Photoshop and add some streaks down it and some dirt, I then used the Arch & Design chrome material and loaded this into the diffuse slot, I got a pretty cool result but it didn't look like chrome, so what's the best method? Or just a good method.

I want to have a nice clean chrome material with some dirt completly coverying up some areas and perhaps some streaks on it

Sorry not got any images.

I'd imagine the problem was down to usually the diffuse colour for chrome is dark but obviously I can't paint dark dirt on dark diffuse colour so perhaps my map was too light?. I'd guess I need to throw a mask in somewhere?

Any tips would be appreciated.

The issue you're going to run into is that dirt isn't just dirt because of it's color, it has a totally different light response (like it's not reflective, etc). I'd do a blend material, place in the first slot your chrome material, in the second slot a dirt material (as though your entire object were 100% covered in dirt) and then in the mask slot place a black and white bitmap which is your mask that reveals the dirt.

That sounds like a good way of doing it. I had tried a spec & bump map in the Chrome material but it just looked odd.

Cheers for your help
