Hi guys,

I'm doing a short animation right now involving a cockroach.
Been looking through books and the net on how insects (more specifically 6-legged insects) walk and fly.

Any tips and tricks or resources would be really helpful. I'm more interested in the actual body mechanics of insects and how they keep their balance, so any papers on that would be invaluable!

Thx alot guys!

there are a number of ways to animate a six legged walk. there is a wave approach where pairs of lages move in a ripple from the back to the front. I would consider using a ripple approach for many limbed insects like millipedes or possible spiders . ths movemtns of the insect would be fairly fluid using this technique

the other approach would be to think of the legs as two tripods:
* -
- *
* -

and alternate moving the two tripods. an insect moving this was would move very quickly. I would recomend setting subframe keys . its more tricky to keep track of but at least wnen it renders you would get some motion blur to help sell the really fast movement

for winged insects I tied the unfolding of the wind to the opening of the carapace for beetles, that way i animate one control and the wings unfold really quickly. The flap is ties to a sine wave controll with a really high frequency , governec by Custom attributes. theis means you can set 2 frames to open the wings and 2 frames to make the wings flap
