use the standard cellular map but with a blend or mix so that you can have several maps creating the different colours
Hope that helps;)

or u could model a couple of different ones and use the scatter compound object. that would add a lot of detail becuase it will be all gemoetry.

You could also literally sprinkle instances of an object that is the model of the sprinkle item(s) using a particle system and a deflector using the shape of the cake to stop the particles with it's friction set to 100% (that way they would stick to it when they hit). Then you could take a snape shot of the result so the sprinkle would be their own model object as a whole.

When you mentioned placing them randomly, what you could do is just place ten or so randomly. After you do that, group select all of them and clone the group, then just rotate the group, move it, and / or scale it. Thats how I usually do things such as: scattered leaves, scattered rocks, etc...

try making a few sprinkles and then using the Scatter feature under compund objects panel... you can may a few unique sprinkles and then scatter each .. on the surface of the cake
you can select the cake top as the scattering surface and then you can control how many and how random and pivoted and adjusted you want them.. :) good luck
is on page 234 of manual 1 :wip:
all this talk is making me hungry for cake.
