Hi folks, could someone give me some feedback on this work in progress? Specifically in the areas of lighting, color saturation and value range? Or any other comments you might have, it always helps.

Also, wasn't there a forum for "hardcore critque" or something? Or is that long gone?

Thanks for any feedback!

I think it's a nice painting with a cute scene - I don't see anything wrong with it (but I'm not a pro).
But is the lady smiling? She looks a little tensed. Maybe if she would smile in a more happy/friendly way this would improve the whole image.

I very much like the environment :applause:

looks good! i like all the little Falcors! hehe
its a very cute painting ^^

as far as value range, keep in mind the actual round form of the object and shade to that rather than making the edges darker or lighter to give the impression of form... really get in there and shade her! hehe

color wise, have fun! i think what your seeing is she seems a little too cartoony (although i can see thats the style, but maybe not in color form) you take the base color of the object and color it with the same color only darker or lighter... try really adding some different colors in there (keep the environment in mind) some blues in the shadows of her skin would really compliment them and pull in the background, same with the skirt, some blues and purples woiuld look good there too. (like you shaded the fence :D the shades are in purple, that looks really really good!)

i agree for the expression of the lady, she seems a little tensed.
For the rest, is a really cute and well done image :)

Thank you all for your thoughtful feedback! I will definitely take this all into account and make some positive changes. I'll post an update afterwards.

Thank you again!

I agree with the former critiques. Loove the fence with the grass. My only addition is that her extended arm looks a little too "clunky" and perhaps it should be more graceful. Also the arm looks like it is made out of a hinged tube. Maybe you could do some subtle curves to hint at a musculature without worrying about doing a realistic arm. Just too many straight lines for me.

Well, I ran out of time on this one so I updated the image and I'm going to call it quits and move on. I got really stuck when it came time to improve on the flesh tones of the character... I think I relied too much on typical skin-tones and didn't experiment enough as with the environment. Thank you all for your suggestions and help!

Your flesh tones shouldn't be of half as much concern as your anatomy rendering...This is SOOooooo close to being "spot on," but then it kind of falls apart with the sense that you tried too hard on the skintones at the sacrifice of the rest of the composition.

I agree about the "tube-y" arms, along with the fact that the proportions suck. Her right arm is a different length, upper and lower, than her left. The legs look real tube-like also, even though you hardly see any of them.
The fake smile is partially due to the tendons bulging out of her neck, making it look forced.
Her entire torso is just too small for the giant head and weird arms and legs.

The background is pleasant, the other focal subjects are interesting and well rendered, but the sky lighting is throwing the entire light source off. Consistency covers a multitude of rendering sins...

Better luck with your next image!
