View Full Version : Troubleshoot : 3dmax will not start
dpvols21 05-26-2003, 04:16 AM I click on the 3dsmax shortcut, (it is 3dmax 5 by the way), and the big rectangle comes up, and in the bottom left, it says 3dmax is initializing, then it will start loading the pluggins, then the big box goes away, and nothing happens, please help.

I don't think Windows 98 is a supported OS?
Hell I don't think even NT4 is supported anymore..
Call techsupport if you feel it's a real problem, but be advised that your 98-useage will be a likely obstacle for any help they can/will provide.

Hi dpvols21,
Disable the anti virus program and try again.
Sometimes this helps.

dcilla usually promp one to find the dcilla if yours is XP. meaning one have to download the dcilla at discreet download section. BUT if u're on max 5 than therein the latest dcilla that ship with em.
There are two other problem that will not let you load max as its supposed to.
1) Your VGA driver is not updated. Remember if u play game on your rig than it is most likely the game will update your direct x automatically. IF this did happen than most likely your vga driver is not updated to make full use of the latest X updates. So windows will assume you have booted up max. you dont see it but its there.
2) than the other is a glitch in the *. initiate file. Getting rid of 3dsmax.ini file might just do the trick. i ever seen a chain that has lots of missing or no plug to the lines in the file thus making it loopy on its booty.

as derelict said the patch for cdilla is at the discreet website in the downloads section.
at the time that happened though i was using max 4 so like derelict said that update should have come with your max 5 disc. and cdilla worked fine with windows 98 anyway. did max just start doing this all of the sudden or have you just installed it?

well, i tried removing the *.ini file, but that didn't work, then it restorred itself, is that normal? And i do play Nascar Racing 2003 on my computer, I play it in Open Gl though not direct x, but i downloaded the latest drivers for my video card, which do support dx9, i installed those, but it's still not working!?

i have 256 mb ram, and my video card is an nvidia gforce4 MX 440-se.....64MB DDR , i just downloaded the latest drivers today, and it says they support dx9, and i do have directx9 installed,

ok, well i reinstalled it, and now it works except one problem, the four squares that come up on the screen are filled with a bunch of different collors and lines, so i can't see any thing i open, now when it asked me to select a renderer, (directx or opengl), i selected directx 9, but it kept saying directx failed to initialize, but i know i have directx9 installed on my computer. i couln't get that to work so i went ahead and selected dx8.1 and then it worked, but now i get all those colors in the boxes, it said i can change to opengl if i use -h command at the start or something, how exactly do i do that,

its a fact that direct x 9 comes in many flavours, mostly in the games that is. Know this well... the direct x that comes with your games are game specific which means they dont have all the driver component. So it just so happened that your direct x 9 is not the full one and its hard to reinstall the direct x again over the old one because stupid windows will think you already have one installed so it will just bypass it.
Anyway, all is not lost, do a google search and download the direct x uninstaller, once that is done just reinstall direct x 8.1
and use the latest driver that is in the nvidia webby.
hope the above works.
but i still say 440 is a snooty card that just dont wanna work hard.
anyway,
Edit : u can change the driver settings in the open port of your max by the -h command
on your start there is a run command. Do a browse for a 3ds.exe file in your max 5 directory and leave a space before keying in a -h in the command line, hit enter.
the second way, which is much easier is to get rid of 3dsmax.ini file within the max root directory.
Cheers dude! All the best!

hey thanks alot, i got it working before i read this post, when i selected dx8.1 there was also a selection for hardware or software, it was on hardware, so i tried the software and it worked!! your right about the card, it is a little small for max, max is a little choppy when i rotate images and things like that, but i am going to try it in opengl ,see how it works, thx agagin for all the help

I had plenty of fun with my GeForce 2 MX-400 back a lil' while ago. You won't be pushing millions of polys around, but learn to use your layers and you can hide all the unneccessary stuff. You'll do just fine :).
I used OGL for what it's worth, and only OGL. DirectX mode has always caused me problems. Anyway, it's good you got it solved.
derelict, what you're saying about DirectX coming in flavours, that sounds pretty interesting. Could you perhaps point me to some article or something that describes it in more detail? I've never heard of it myself, and being naturally curious about these things I'd like to know more.

yeah! opengl is a lot smoother, just like u said gaggle, directx gives me problems too, but this was the best video i could get for my computer, other than the 128 mb gforce MX PCI card nividia has but Nascar 2003 always locked up with it, and they are still trying to make new drivers to fix that, and since my motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot :banghead: i had to settle for this one, until i get a new computer, this is what i'm with
