Hello all,

Thought I'd post my first half-decent render up using (recently aquired ) 3DSMax 5.1, first post here, so hope the image displays!

Used Photoshop for the maps, Max for evrything else. Reasonably happy with it, but:

Pommel jewel looks slightly flat.
Got some unwanted highlights on the base.
Stand is perhaps too plain ( may be remodled ).
Gold Leaf in the book doesn't shine enough.
Candleholder material bit boring.

Anyway, thoughts? Other criticisms? Fire away!

Cheers, Steve.

P.S. It's a Power-Sword ( from WH40K ), hence the wires from the hilt!

I like it, but add more pages to the book! :bounce: Much better than my sword, even though my sword sucks, lol.

you should bevel the edges of the candle holder base, and you should add some scratches and dents to the sword holder and table.

otherwise i like it alot

Thanks for the replys!

Actually there are more pages in the book, 140 individually modelled pages in fact! There just not showing up clearly at the moment... may need to do something about that. :hmm:

Yep, candle holder and sword-stand are definitely the weak points. Originaly concieved as rough-edged metal blocks -hence no bevels- but not really working that well. Ho-Hum, time for a "re-imagining" session.

Cheers, Steve.

I kind of see them now...cool.
I have another idea, texture the stand that has the book with wood...the rock texture is kind of odd looking to me. IMO.

Yep, pretty hard to see, problem is the candle in the foreground is illuminating the pages, without casting any clear shadows... may need to exclude the lower pages from the light, then use another light to cast clearer shadows...

Woods for the stand is a good idea. I thought about a old-heavily polished mahogany type wood, tried it but it wasn't looking right. Having a go at a rusted/corroded metal texture right now, probably post the results later!

Cheers, Steve.

Well, here's my latest version, new metal textures for the stand and adjusted lighting on the book pages:

Once again, thought & criticisms welcome!

Cheers, Steve.
