View Full Version : Character: Grandpa
Sensei 05-26-2003, 03:48 AM Hello.
It's my the first finished attempt to create human head. Everything was done in LightWave v7.0 using
the Dave's way (http://www.thehobbitguy.com/tutorials/polymodeling/index.html) which I found accidentally looking at www.flay.com and found it much easier than box modeling (I am NOT 3D graphics artist, but programmer!)
Here you could see little animation (http://www.republika.pl/plugins/Graphics/Movies/Grandpa_Head.avi).
And better quality pictures (PNG instead of JPEG): 1 (http://www.republika.pl/plugins/Graphics/Grandpa_Head_1.png), 2 (http://www.republika.pl/plugins/Graphics/Grandpa_Head_2.png), 3 (http://www.republika.pl/plugins/Graphics/Grandpa_Head_3.png).
These ears are really so big in my model (Grandpa)! :)

Don't know if you noticed that this is the thread for finished work...
You better should have posted this in the WIP instead.

Nobody will say a word or two about it? Is it really so bad? :)
I will appreciate any comments about how to texture it, because, to be honest, currently I don't have inspiration and don't know where to start... In texturing I suck much more than in modeling...

hey there... nice work so far
currently he doesn't look that old. try adding more fallen skin and wrinkles, especially in the cheeks and forehead area.
also, add that breathing holes to the nose (i forgot the english word).
don't forget to show your progress :)

Nice model so far!
one thing though, make sure you upgrad to version 7.5, it's free and apparently far better.

Well, I think the major thing is that various parts of the model show different levels of detail and style. The eye is very simple, the ear is quite realistic, and the mouth is also simple. Looks like you had some troubles getting the parts together.
Might want to do a search here for 'edge loop' in the modeling section.
I also have two modeling tutorials u at my site.
Check the link in my sig and let me know if they help.

Trust me, eye is not simple. It maybe just currently looks like that, because of primitive shading and lack of texturing. The main, currently brown, part of eye (none of my English dictionaries had this word... even on-line one!) has a couple of points and polygons, it is not flat. See wireframe.
Ears was done using the Dave's way, completely independently to the rest of head and then joined... Currently not too well, because if you see head from front you see no ears at all ;)
Single ears has arround 300 vertices, where the rest of half-head has 600...
Yes, I had a lot of problems with getting the parts join nice. I believe it is a result of bad head preparation, I should divide it better at the first stage, and then just figthed with this fault the rest of modeling process. The next time I will be smarter :)
I saw your's tutorial already. Great site :)
