Directed by Peter Greenaway and cinematographer Reinier van Brummelen, it's been showing on a copy of the painting in Milan for several weeks now, and permission was finally given to project on the real painting in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie on Monday night (30 June)
The small rendered video showing a clip of it there doesn't give the slightest appreciation of the real experience of course, seeing the huge, and now badly decayed and forlorn, mural come to life in 3d. It's getting great reviews from the people who were actually there, and since they don't allow many people in there and it's only a 10 minute show, only a few hundred people will ever get to see it. It was a one-off, because the real mural is so heavily protected these days, it's amazing they ever let it happen once, and it took a lot of persuading with the Italian authorities, but it's still running on the copy not far away.

I did all the modeling for this project. I basically created the entire painting as a 3d sculpture, using Mudbox, and it was then animated in Lightwave by Reinier, and this is then superimposed over the painting using several projectors set up in the refectory.

Here was an early WIP screengrab of the modeling process.

It was tricky getting the right balance of detail for this, since it was to have the painting projected over it and the lighting animated, so I didn't want the model details to be overbearing on what is now a quite flat and faded painting. Every detail had to match up perfectly with the painting of course. A lot of it is now decayed and missing, which also meant I had to fill in a lot of blanks in the modeling process.
There are already plans for further paintings to be brought to life in this way.

This sounds very interesting, also great modeling obviously.
Could you please provide us with additional information or pics?

Greenaway is an amazing director. I loved everything I saw from him, and this is no different. Really nice idea.

I'd like to see more material tho. More picture of the event (if there are any?) would be great, and a bit more info on how it was actually projected. I understand it was projected onto the real thing, yet they seems to refer to somekind of holographic effect. More info on the setup would be great to hear.

Thanks for sharing, the models looks amazing.

Really good job. Congradulations.

Did you create the low poly obs in Lightwave as well?

You're right, that the clip gives no clue of what was intended.

How did projecting something onto the painting make it appear 3D?

Ghastly music choice btw. I mean really ghastly.

I think i agree withthe critic who said greenaway was using da vinci's art to get attention. And i'm also doubtful this event is a "pivotal" moment in the painting's history. What a presumptuous notion!

But looks like great modeling! congrats on the gig!

Well, it gives Greenaway some attention obviously, but it also gives the painting a lot of new attention as well, looking at it in (literally) a new light, and most people say they saw things that they never saw before.
A lot of people say that the painting no longer represents Da Vinci's original work anyway, since it's so decayed and has been restored so many times over the centuries, and now it's just doomed to slowly fade into nothing in it's protected environment.
The painting wasn't always revered of course. This extreme admiration bordering on worship for old artwork is a largely a modern phenomenon. You'll notice that they actually knocked a doorway through the middle of the painting at some point in the past.
For the record, I didn't particularly like the choice of music either, I would have preferred sound effects, such as they did on the earlier project of Rembrandt's Night Watch, where they created more of a narrative using highlighting and specific sounds tied to elements in the painting.

Here's some more images.

Didnt like the music as well. Music can ruin everything actually.

I am sure watching this live is really exciting.

how do you match perfectly all the pose ?

this must be a great experience to see it for real.

You could do this as a normal map with a nintendo wii-like motion sensor controller as a 'flashlight'

Wait, did I just invent the 21st century holodeck?

Your work looks like its usual nth degree of perfection, but the video (at least the excerpt) doesn't say much, in fact I don't quite know what I'm looking at (ie, it doesn't show off your work).
I looked at your website - do you do goofy characters or just classical looking stuff?

oDDity, nice to see you showing off something!! (remembered you as the most sincere lightwave user in the planet, too sincere to be polite, hehe). Congratulations man! that models look great, and the video looks, I don't know, too damn little to see!! I would love a little of camera trip, or maybe not... maybe some angles, without losing the elegance, I don't know, I'm not Greenaway, but... that video is not as great as it could be, I think
