View Full Version : Maya - rendering a base level wireframe on a smoothed mesh?

Hi folks, been trying to figure this out for a while. I've got nice base mesh renders, with wireframes, just by using the contour renderer option in MR.

What I'd like now though is to render out the smoothed meshes, with wire, but still the base wire without the extra subdivisions. I've searched for plugins and got a couple for wires, but none with this specific functionality.

Closest I can get is creating a colour map from a uv snapshot - which nearly works (and does on some models) but inevitably shows distortion on areas where uv seams meet.

any suggestions very welcome,

cheers

Hi gubarachi,

Is it the sort of thing you could create via Photoshop or similar, maybe using multiply (or another blend mode) to put the base level wireframe over a smoothed but wireless render?

It might be a faster way of achieving the kind of look you're after than sweating it out of MR.

Hi Ashord,

thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, due to the nature of smoothing - where say, a hexagonal cylinder will become a circular cylinder - the wire would appear to float off of the surface of the smoothed version, not following the same contours.

The kind of thing I'd like to achieve is like when you press the 3 key to smooth mesh preview in the viewport (with wireframe on shaded "on") - smoothed object, base mesh wireframe.

cheers
