Hey everybody,
This is my current animation showreel. I hope you enjoy it, as it was quite fun animating it all :) (and a lot less fun watching the encoding process). Done in XSI and Maya. I'm also looking for work in London right now as an animator.
It can be downloaded from here or the image above:

Good luck with the job hunt. :)

I like the poses!
the woman in the burglar clip does not seem to be saying her lines.
Yes, I know her mouth is not visble to the camera, but some more sort of body nuance needs to be going on there to connect her to the audio.
Good looking stuff!

really enjoyed that man, the everything is great, although i do think the dialogue piece could have more subtlesties in his gestures, but i'm nit picking, well done
edit: i work at blitz games as an animator, its not exaclty in London but we're always looking for talented guys like yourself, google is, its in Leamington Spa, pretty cool place to work!

Pretty sweet. Some of the dialogue could use a little more exaggeration in my opinion but overall i really enjoyed the reel. The baby is PRICELESS! Very nice.

Thanks a lot everyone for the nice comments and good feedback :)
the woman in the burglar clip does not seem to be saying her lines.
I think you're right, actually. I seem to have neglected secondary characters a bit (I also think in the baby one too), so it's something I'll try and remember to watch out for more, thanks :)
Hope you are OK.
Hey man, thanks :) Good to see you spotted it on here, hope you're well, and good luck with the kittens :scream:

Yeah, there is always this :) Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I'm not really ready to move abroad or anything like that quite yet, although it is something I'd like to do in the future.

Hah - now that's what I call real animation!
Great stuff, and typical of you to go from nought to the Front Page in one leap:-)
btw - Mr. Puss now calls himself 'Uncle Tom'. He says hi.
Nice reel Tuna, as stated the secondary characters could use a little TLC but really that's secondary:) Strong stuff, keep it up.

Haha, I've been meaning to disassosiate myself with such riffraff for years!
btw - Mr. Puss now calls himself 'Uncle Tom'. He says hi.
Hehe, well say hi back! (and thanks!)
Btw: did you learn animation by yourself? Or college or something?
I've always just learned it by myself, buying books, getting feedback and reading stuff online. You'd be amazed at some of the great animation blogs online these days if you look around. Getting it all to stick in your head while animating is another matter though... I'm always reading stuff in the illusion of life or on a blog somewhere and hitting myself on the head, wondering why I didn't think of this extremely obvious thing at the time of animating :banghead:
Sorry for the mini-rant there :)
Nice reel Tuna, as stated the secondary characters could use a little TLC but really that's secondary
Hey man, thanks. Yeah it seems this is the main problem, I only wish I realised it earlier as it's probably a bit late to fix now, but will definitely pay more attention to it in the future.
Thanks for the feedback everybody.

I too noticed that it cut off rather abruptly. I checked the YouTube version and it had the extra second or two at the end with the baby that is missing on the download version.
I'm watching it with VLC media player.
Anyone else having the same problem ?
Thanks for the laugh ! I'm glad that I got to see the whole thing.
Inspiring work !

hey Tuna,
Theres some great work here. To be honest I dont think the burgular scene is under-animated at all, despite what some have mentioned. Its always hard to figure out how much is too much and how much is not enough, and its almost ALWAYS worse if you go too far instead of too little. I think you hit a great balance. The little eye dart after he says "neightbourhood" communicates so well. It seems like you made this scene much about the eyes, and toned down the body movement, which was a good choice.
I love the section where the baby goes to cry, raises his arm, and then does the hand plant on the mother... its perfect how you offset the timing and it delivers brilliantly.
for crits, I would maybe suggest rendering your sequences with some motion blur? ... they appear a little strobey sometimes, especially noticable on the bartenders arm swings in the first shot. maybe some of your offsetting of body parts can seem a *little* hitchy ( when the baby sits back up after looking at the fallen rattle for example )...but this is minor. I assume you work in a pose based stepped-key way right? I think maybe just spend a little extra attention to the arcs and fluidity of some of the transitions.
anyway.. nice work mate.

I noticed a problem with the scene where the guy slides down the stair railing. During his anticipation before he begins the slide, his right hand penetrates through the railing where he's gripping it. I would clean that up before sending your reel out to studios.
Overall though, nice work!

thats some nice work you share with us.
one little critique. watch out, in your last shot, near the end..
there is geometry from the baby intersecting/crashing with the other character..
besides that i really enjoyed watching it!
cheers
-Jens
Thanks again to everyone's comments!

Hey, great crits, thanks a lot. About the motion blur, I wasn't sure if either way was the correct way to do it, so I decided not to because it was a lot faster to render (and re-render). I think by the time it came to rendering, I had seen them so much in playblasts that the strobing wasn't as obvious to me as fresh eyes. So I've definitely noted for the future to add motion blur :)
About the arcs, I totally agree. I said to myself "wow I've really been neglecting any sort of opportunity for major arcs in these shots" and decided to do the bartender thing with a lot more arcs in the arms and movements of the hips and head. As for the breakdowns, I've also been trying to tackle that, you were spot on when you brought up the pose to pose method. I've since been trying to incorperate a lot more breakdowns before I switch to spline, so I can work out those issues before it gets too busy. Hopefully it'll work.
Cheers :)

Grr I didn't notice that, thanks.

did not noted it.. and don't think that's a reason for not sending or showing your reel at all
but again is not like a big fix if you just go to that frame and paint those 4 pixels on the
hand.
awesome! stuff ,, and even more if you learned on your own.
