View Full Version : how can i deform a chainlink fence to look like it was struck?
seguefy 07-02-2008, 07:29 PM i modelled an entire wire metal fence in 3D, you know, like this:
http://www.airport-technology.com/contractor_images/magal/wire-fence3.jpg
which is basically a ton of curves which i turned into 3d pipes. so i have my entire fence model.
now i want to deform the fence so it looks like some sort of monster just bumped into it. imagine if the Hulk slammed into the fence (but didnt break through), but it pushed all the chainlinks out into the shape of his collision.
i have a model of a 3D humanoid whose shape i want to "imprint" into my fence model.
whats the easiest and most efficient way of pulling this off??

I can't see your image, but I'm assuming it pretty much looks like a 3d model of a chainlink fence. :)
But, I'd do it with cloth- turn your (hopefully small and low poly) fence area into cloth and have the body (with a collider tag) collide into it- turn up the stiffness of the fence to like 1000 and then just push the character into it. You'll have to experiment with the cloth settings, but I just did a plane crash this way and it worked great. Clothilde is amazing.
If that proves to be too many polys to turn into cloth, you could always make a flat poly section of the fence with a texture made from your fence model and collide into that.
Hope that makes sense.

I'd try soft selection or the magnet and deform the fence.

If they're splines, Project?
Hmm, both of the above methods sound equally enticing.
In the long run, it will probably come down to the poly count of the fence either being too dense or hard to control with cloth, forcing you to use sneakers method.
I am very interested in the outcome of this.
I would also love to know your method of creating the chain link fence.
I've thought about it before, but never acted on it due to the "perceived" complexity and length of time.
If it's not too much to ask, could you enlighten me on your method and problems encountered?

Cloth would be cool...
but I personally would subdivide the section that the character smashes into... place the character in the impact pose... then brush and pull the section of fence out to match the body. Make sure to constantly keep moving your camera around to different views.

hi,
you may wanna check this -> fence (http://www.frenchcinema4d.fr/forum/index.php?topic=21075.60)
4th page, fence done with splines + formula with deformer applied.

Great tip!
That just gave me some cool ideas of my own thx! :D
