Okay. a Little backstory.
Remember the superhero TV "shazam" with the red suit and yellow lightning bolt, well his name was Captain Marvel and the word he yell was of this wizard, Shazam.

Shazam forged an alliance between a hebrew king, a titan,
3 greek gods and a roman warrior to give Cap his powers.

------------------------------

Anyway i need some help on this..anything words of advice will do.
tear me up....
Note: the white wire coming from his face are hairguides for a fur shader.

Is there anything you can't tell whats going on?
let me know....
Tear it up guys.

This project of yours is really coming along well. You can see improvement with every post.

Initially the things that stood out to me were his left hand's fingers pointing oddly (as if he were arthritic) and the fact that the letters carved out of the stone wall didn't go in and out with the mortar. The booleans show that they're extracted from a flat plane, rather than real stones.

Otherwise, it's getting pretty impressive. Keep it up!

S-Socrates
H-Hercules
A-
Z-Zeus

Ok now the rest! :)

is that for an animation project?

seems good to me!
i know the character of Cptn Marvel, even if i dunno his whole story.
i remember well the great Alex Ross version in Kingdom Come comic book.:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

in this image what Shazam is exacly doing? writing on the wall with his energy, like sort of God "writing" the 10 comandments?

if is an animation can be good.

if its a still , something seems not work with the composition. i like
very much Shazam, but something in the composition still don't works. infact i don't understand exactly what Shazam is doing.

Julez4001

ahhhh he suppose to be adding Zeus name to the acroynm by using magic lightning to write on the wall. So his pose doesn't convey this. Its just a still for a wallpaper. Please tell me more.

Nemoid
05-26-2003, 04:51 PM
Ah, now i understand well.

the pose can be good, but IMHO there are 2 main probs with this image..

1) the lightning in his right hand appears more like a energy tree than a real lightning. i think the "rays" have to be more.. zig zag to convey this effect.

2) the writings on the wall, maybe its your choice, but slightly contrast with the realistic illustration look of the image. it may be cool if they appear like sculpted on the stone from the lightnings, with irregular edges and luminous.

i like very very much the aspect of Shazam, as well as the lighting on the wall next the last writing! really cool!!!

so, u will add the lightning starting from the hand to the writing, isn't it??

Cool!!

can't wait to see Cpt Marvel!!!!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Julez4001
05-26-2003, 05:18 PM
I won't add the lighning from hand to the hwall.
This is suppose to be more of a after the writing effect.
I need to add some melting stone effect as well.
Zeus is still blue as it just was burnt on but i will model the bricks.

Nemoid
05-26-2003, 07:28 PM
 mmm...

i thought so because of the burning lighting on the end of Zeus.
maybe some smoke will help to enhance the fx of a " finished just now" writing.
also, the extremely dynamic pose of Shazam doen't suggest (to me) he just finished to write. he should be in a more relaxed position i think, with his right arm not so straightly up.

my 2 cents (of Euro)

webfox
05-26-2003, 09:38 PM
I don't think he's finished writing in that shot. He's still got two more letters to go.

The pose is correct for the creation of the next letter.

So far all he's got is "SHAZ"

(Though the Robin Williams fan in me wishes he'd write "BOT" next. )

What's that white stuff coming out of his right arm? Tree branches? Is he part Ent? :scream:

I think the pose and composition looks a bit odd. If he's supposed to be throwing lightning at the wall he'd probably be further away from the wall and facing at the wall, not standing to the side of the text looking stiff and freaky as a stick man. His pose is all rigid and awkward. It might look a bit more dynamic if you positioned him like a baseball pitcher at the mound throwing a pitch but make the letters and the wall quite a bit larger and further away from the Ent guy.
For all that lightning action he should be carving out some seriously large text.

hth:)

Is there a way to show that he's somehow a conduit for the energy cutting into the stone?

Maybe if the energy coming into his hand were redirected along another bolt that sears the wall?

Just a thought.

Consider posing yourself as him and imagine what it would feel like if that energy were coursing through your body. How would you tighten your body with the surge?

Your back might arch more and your fingers might clutch or grasp at the air in apparent pain. Even though you are controlling the energy, you may still find it unpleasant.

It's difficult to tell a story in a single image. Elaborate with body language and a clear composition that tells the viewer immediately what's going on.

Keep at it, man. It's going to be great. :applause:

Julez4001

The pose is quite diffucult. He is quite elderly. Older than Gandalf.
He is not as dynamic as I would like him to be, as it wouldn't lend to his age.
I can make the letters bigger but then I would have to make the size of th epicture bigger to add the extra space. I wanted a close shot. I'll arching him back as ready to strike and see what happens though.

Thanks for the feedback I will keep on ...keeping on.

By the way..what happen to Point2Poly plugin?

There are a bunch of point to spline to polygon generators out there...

This site is maintained by Hurley who runs Worley Labs. There is an lscript here for generating the 2 point polygon guides. (http://www.hurleyworks.com/)

Okay. Took Chewey advice.
I have the old man arching back for grab another bolt to continue burning the gods' names to the list. I add a some voxels to catch the light from the buring wall and the lightning.

The wall is nice but its shader is fighting the legiblity of the words being burnt in the wall. I may have to custom paint his thing.
Anybody have any tips on using paint maps for color, it seems not to be working for me. at least not the eay I want.

Will add more particles from the burn area
Add the lightning
add some fog
and render the hair.

This all one render pass...
I will eventually render it all sp and recoop in Photoshop.

Any more crits.

Here there is a very quick sketch i did after lunchtime of a possible Shazam position.
i am sorry i couldn't do better in a so little time.

as u can see his right arm is flexed for a more quiet position, and rays are more zig zag like lightning.

hope this can help:thumbsup:

The last pic is much better. Better pose, better composition, smoke ground is great, adds a lot to mystical power.
The one thing that I would change is lower the space between each line of typo, a bit more like Nemoid's drawing. So that it will look a bit more blocky (strong) more compact. And perhaps typos a little bigger, more monumental IMHO
Perhaps diminish the light on the wall so that the typo will look brighter.

Keep it up !

Not bad for 3 days -- Memorial day weekend.

This is a render
2 hrs and 25 sec at 800
but I cut the res down and paint over what i am shooting for with the lightning bolt and the burnt area of the letters , you can see there burned around the letters. Blurred the background a lil, too. I want the lightning to be 3d (as most of the picture) and I think I have find a techique for what i want that is going to be 3 type of lightning effects. I also want more bluish-ppl in the lightning outline.

FacialD, I definitely thinking about bolders letters.
I am gonna remodel the wall a 4th time and look for a better "biblical" type font.

For those care, New Line Cinema bouth the Shazam movie rights.
William Goldman (Butch Cassidy, Princess Bride, Maverick, Chaplin etc) is writing the script. Looking for 2005/2006 release window. New Line also bought Ironman (Marvel Comics). New Line Cinema is a sister company to WarnerBros who own DC comics.

A couple of things about the carved out letters...

Consider making the engraving less deep. It doesn't have to go a full 3" into the wall. No matter what omniscient forces are at work, a perfectly booleaned letter that deep will always look a little odd. Part of the readability issue is that the shadows are so strong. Shallower letters will help this.

Also, try making the shader for the carved out letters with zero diffusion and all luminosity. That will eliminate the shadows outright and make it much more readable.

It's looking really good, though. You'll definitely have a magazine cover quality piece by the time you're done.

also i am opened 4 collaboration in character design (ok much more awesome than my Shazam !!) with everyone!! 4 no w i haven't a website, but its coming soon...

p.s. if i remember well, New Line made an awful job with Fantastic 4 movie.. but it can also be Corman production. however ... UUURGH! jeez! that movie really sucks!!

i am indeed interested in seing an Iron man movie, as well as a Shazam one.!!:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

what a hell of movie was that!!! the only thing i liked a bit was "the thing" even if he seemed a boxeur during fights.
i hope they will do a better movie this time.
i was wondering about who could be the director of such a movie, and i think that James Cameron is the right one.

about the drawing: if u think this one was superkool, u didn't see anything other! 4 my skills that drawing sucks!!
soon i will post a great char design i made for a friend, for a tattoo. i have to wait till he gets tattooed, because surely he doesn't want other people to use it.!!!

i have 2 versions and i am thinking to use the first one for a great W.I.P. with Lw:thumbsup:

Ahhh, now I remember this. I hadn't been on here for ahwile, but I did see the other thread. Anyhow, it's coming along very nicely!

For improvement, I would consider the following:

I'm wondering what it would look like with "handmade" letters. You might try rounding out the ends of the strokes. Then again, I've never seen what lightning forged letters on stone looks like. ;)

The left handcuff looks a little akward to me, as if it's defying gravity. (too round/circular).

His beard should be pointing straight down, but I know the reason it is the way it is now is because he was in a different pose; but don't forget to fix that.

I don't know if it's the lighting, but the left hand looks a bit flat. The way the ends of the fingers are bent seems a bit too extreme, imho. I put my hand up on a wall trying to immitate that pose and I couldn't get my fingers to bend like that. (They looked more like a C than an L). Also, since he's old, adding some bump mapped big veins might help sell the wizard. However, you might not be done texturing yet or don't want to(if thats the look you're going for); if so, ignore my last statement :)

I would think there would be more light behind him on the wall if that much lightning was present.

The fog and everything else is very good. The pose is much improved. The cloth and the man's face is exceptionally done.

Keep in mind the above is only meant as suggestions and in no way means I don't like the image. I think it's a fabulous image and it's coming along very nicely!

and the wall is still in que to modified.
I haven't had the chance to work on this in a few days but thats good cause I jump on with a fresh prespective.

I pulled the camera back, too...

Dude, I hate to be pedantic, but you've got the Greek/Roman thing the wrong way 'round, at least where Heracles is concerned.

Hera was wife of Zeus in the Greek Myth, the name comes from her spite towards Zeus mortal son.
Euripides, the Greek playwright spelled it Heracles.

http://classics.mit.edu/Euripides/heracles.html

The name got Romanised to Hercules when the Romans adopted the greek pantheon.

In fact, the letter "C" wasn't represented in the ancient greek alphabet, so the actual spelling would be Herakles.

Just my 0.05.

Nemoid
06-02-2003, 05:21 PM
Yap u right!!

Hercules is the roman, and Heracles the greek.
however, Shazam was a comic book, and in american comic books often they use Hercules name i don't know why.

about the image, Julez, i think is going on nicely!! i like the writings on the wall !! now they are better also i like the column in the background, wich is very nice.

the only doubt i have, is about the center of interest of your composition wich is too next to the bottom-right of the image,
IMO.
also i think Shaz must have the place to write the final A and M, right?
