View Full Version : fast
droon 07-02-2008, 01:11 PM Hey,
Is there a faster way to render toon syle then using sketch and toon?
sketch and toon is nice, but soooo slooow.
I don't need complex tapered overshoot lines or hatch shaders, just outlines and edges in one solid line fine, I really like the speed of cell rendrerer, but offcourse it's inadequate for actually seeing what's going on. alhough if you duplicate the object and offset it sligtly, you can get pretty good results! but i'd like this in a shader or something! or a plugin.. or super efficient sketch and toon settings?
any tips/tricks?

Hmm, how do you define "sooooo slow"? Actually S&T is pretty fast! Whatīs your ouput size? Whatīs your settings? Whatīs the complexity of the scene? As in any scene there is always a way to optimize it.
S&T is the best and fastest you can get in C4D afaik.

I don't know how slow, i never waited for the render to end. it was just calculating lines. an hour at least. for one technical looking object with the default s&t settings. The model is pretty big though.. 900 000+ polygons. I did a reduce polygons and that helped.
but when you do cell renderer on this it goes lightning fast! like a few seconds for a render. and if you intersect it with all kind of things it draws the intersections too equally fast.

one hour? phew, thatīs way too much, but not suprising considering you are using the default settings. What is the style you are going for? What lines do you need? You must give us some hints how this shall look like, otherwise itīs hard to judge.

Ok, not default, but pretty close, I have border, crease, and fold on, crease at 30, quantize at 3 and a material with 40% lightness, so I get black lines and grey to white shading. I think there's something in the model that makes the renderer freak.. it also refuses to render very obvious edges as lines, it's an imported model, maybe the normals are all wrong...
tnx fer the help btw.

I've had similar problems with sketch and toon - I've not been able to mess with it enough to get the rendertimes down into reaonable range.
I'd love to see where this thread goes. Thanks!
