View Full Version : Subdiv and Smoothing Groups
RET-Ghost 07-01-2008, 12:56 PM Sorry if this seems like a beginner question but its bugging me. Are Subdiv in Maya basically the same thing a smoothing groups in Max? That and how do smoothing groups work the way they do without adding more polygons? Just some questions that have been bugging me.

Hello
In Maya subd's are subdivision of geometry, so the subd mesh is actually having geometry added. In Max smoothing groups are groupings of polys based on angle of normals, used to base shading on. No geometry is added just calculated at render time with smoother shading over the group if possible (angle of degree and such).
In Max using 'Smooth' on the poly's of a mesh will add faces much as subd's do.
