View Full Version : noob question on welding in 3ds max
LordEdwin 06-30-2008, 11:33 PM I'm working through a tutorial on a character model and am stuck on a welding method described that does not seem to be working for me. It basically involves welding the sides of a head with one side (4 verts across 3 edges) of an ear. The ear is a closed shape. The tutorial says to select the 4 verts on the ear and snap to the 4 appropriate verts on the side of the head. I then use the weld option window to make sure the threshold is correct because the intent is to reduce the 8 verts to 4 once the welding is done. However, with the verts snapped and selected, they are not welding. In the weld option window, the number of vertices before and after does not change, wheareas it should be 4 less for 'after'. Am I missing something in terms of welding a closed shape to another surface? Do I have to open up the side of the head and only weld open edges to one another?

It's hard to visualize what you're talking about, but it sounds like, yes, you need to open up the side of the head and weld the verts of the open edges together. Also make sure the vertexes are close enough to each other for this to work (as well as changing the threshold)

I've solved it with a standard deletion of some of the polys on the head and the inner side of the ear and then welding the now-open vertices together. I'm guessing the tutorial is either incorrect or just omitted the requirements that the weld vertices not be closed off.
