I want to do this as a career, but the problem is, I'm entirely self-taught (no classes yet). This has given me some concern as to whether I'm doing things right. I've been trying to looking around at what other people are doing, but it can get pretty confusing.
So far, I know how to box model, but I usually don't for organic models. I think what I do is called poly modeling. I basically start from scratch and model one poly at a time. I've noticed most people seem to use quads, but I tend to switch back and forth from quads to triangles, because it gives me more control. A lot of the time I end up using triangles more than quads. Another thing I've noticed is that people use turbosmooth or meshsmooth (I use 3ds max). I rarely get good results with this, probably because those have quad outputs and I use triangles, which ends up looking messy. Instead, I use HSDS, which seems to always be clean and closest to what I want. So I was wondering, should I stick to box modeling and meshsmooth only, or can I continue doing hybrid quad and triangle poly modelling with HSDS?
