View Full Version : I want to know if I'm modeling in an acceptable way.

I want to do this as a career, but the problem is, I'm entirely self-taught (no classes yet). This has given me some concern as to whether I'm doing things right. I've been trying to looking around at what other people are doing, but it can get pretty confusing.

So far, I know how to box model, but I usually don't for organic models. I think what I do is called poly modeling. I basically start from scratch and model one poly at a time. I've noticed most people seem to use quads, but I tend to switch back and forth from quads to triangles, because it gives me more control. A lot of the time I end up using triangles more than quads. Another thing I've noticed is that people use turbosmooth or meshsmooth (I use 3ds max). I rarely get good results with this, probably because those have quad outputs and I use triangles, which ends up looking messy. Instead, I use HSDS, which seems to always be clean and closest to what I want. So I was wondering, should I stick to box modeling and meshsmooth only, or can I continue doing hybrid quad and triangle poly modelling with HSDS?

Hey there, I doubt I am the man to help you because I am self taught as well but I share your pain :P

Anyway, I would suggest posting some wires of your models in this thread so people can give you feedback on your technique. From my limited experience however I would generally stick with the quad route. I know its the best option if you want to use Z-Brush etc. so if you are having problems with it then I would get practicing.

I don't use max much but has done so in the past and generally used Turbosmooth on the mesh, and tris and the like cause all sorts of kinks in there so again I would try quads.

Alternativly if you are into game modelling then tris are OK, however these days most folk to their high poly and low poly models for Normal Mapping and any screens i have seen of this usually have quads.

With regards to the box modelling or pulling pollys, i think its up to you. I usually do a mix of both depending on the requirement of the model. So i don't think this really matters as long as you are comfortable with it.

Anyway, hope this helps and you also get some more info to help you.

Cheers

Here's a couple wireframes of the low poly models and their high-res results:

^ this brings up another question: where all can you show work based off of copyrighted material? I know you can't really use it in portfolios or demo reels, but I like doing it for practice. I just never know where I can get away with showing it.
