is this what you want? Just put an extrude modificator on your shape.

ah, okay. maybe the most efficient way for something like this is sub-d modelling! attached a 2min modell so that you will get the clue of it!

sub-d means subdivision modelling:

You can achieve that p.e. in 3ds max by adding a Mesh smooth modifier.
One thing is quiet important: Your object should consist of quad surfaces.
