View Full Version : Question on making a Basketball Net

Hi all. Still learning at Cinema 4D, but getting the hang of it a little bit. I'm working on a 3d Logo based off of a 2d one I made a little while ago, the logo is for a basketball camp. Anyway, I'm having 2 problems with it.

1: I can't seem to get a realistic fire down. I want the basketball to have an "on fire" look to it, but all of my experiments have a really cheap look to it. I can't find any good tutorials on how to do it.

2: The one I'm really worried about is the look of the net. As of right now, I have a cylinder that I made editable, then made to the shape of the net, then added an "Atom array" to it. But, obviously, it looks very rigid and unrealistic. Any better ways? I saw this thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47733&highlight=basketball+net), but it is based on Lightwave, and I'm curious if there are any other ways to make a net.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

Instead of modeling each string of the net, I would use and Alpha mask.

Alpha mask. Try and photograph a real net as the basis for it, if you're really tall...

Thanks for the advice, guys... but won't that give the net a kind of 2d/flat look to it? I'm kind of wanting this to be a net that is close up... An alpha mask will look good only from kind of far away, I would think...

you could hypernurb subdivide the object you got in the atom array.. not sure how well that would work but worth a try i guess..

hmm use an atom array and then use deformers to make it smoother and then make sure you have a GOOD texture.

I wouldnt try alpha for this one personally might be way to 2D feeling.

the key is smoothness with the deformers and then good textures.

Ahhh, JIII... That seems like the answer I was looking for... Why didn't I think of that?

I must be a genius, lol not hardly.

For the fire I would look around for the comet thread I think there was one here a while ago. just do a forum search.

also there was a missle one to about pyrocluster. so if you have pryo it could help you to.

search for comets asteroids and pryocluster.

you just might find the answer.

What is this atom array? Sounds really interesting...

Or is it R8?

For fire I suggest checking this (http://www.maxoncomputer.com/tutorial_detail.asp?tutorialID=108&site=) out. A very render friendly way to achieve realistic fire. I made some really awsome fire with that one, way better than Maxon's example itself, if I may add...
:arteest:

And it animates absolutely beautifull...!

Kirl, I guess I remember seeing that tutorial before... I guess I didn't remember it, or maybe It just looks a little too different from what I want it to do. I think if I just make the light a spotlight, then I should be able to get the effect I want... Thanks.

As to "Atom Array", it is under "Objects-Models-Atom Array". It basically makes any object look like one of those models you loved to hate in your high school Chemistry class. For the net, I just set the sphere's radius to the same as the cylinders radius. But the cylinders don't really bend then, which is what is causing my problems with the net. Here's an example of the "Atom Array"

just to clarify atom array is indeed r8 only kirl.

This is just an interesting litle discovery.

when you delete polys from an object and then use atom array the points that are now no longer used still generate spheres leading to this very interesting effect.

Oops... Didn't realize that it was an 8 only feature. I just started with Cinema 4D, so I'm not familiar with older versions. As to the little dots being left behind, I caught that too when I was making the net. Speaking of which, I still haven't figured out exactly how to do the net, but I'm working on a way to do it.

The fire, on the other hand... I'm getting the hang of it. I want to get some more white into the mix somehow, but other than that, the flames are looking pretty darn good.

I tried it with a spline, in a sweep NURBS, in an array with this result. It wasn't as difficult to align the points as I expected; by dropping the spline in an array and selecting & moving pairs of points it went pretty easily.

Actually it's available for XL6/7 in the SDK plugins--available at Plugin Cafe.

Thanks, I'll check that out...

To get more white in the fire you can try upping the contrast or otherwise the brightness in the first tab. I forgot most parameters involved.

Looking good.

Cinema1954: cool method...array never even thought of that...then i'd use ..solidspline pro plugin...just to confuse issue of course.
:wip:

hm yeahI tried the deformer thing and it didnt work to weel. the porblem is that there are not enough polys. When you try and solve this by makingit editable it still will not bend enough. this is due to the lack of sideways polys, this makes the deformations hell.

splines looks like the way to go.

I don't try it with atom array yet but i think mine is possible with previous versions too.

1- Create a cylinder
Mine is : Radius: 2,5 / Height: 330 / Height seg: 20 / Rot. Seg: 18

2- Put it in an array object
Mine is : Radius: 135 / Copies: 17 / other options are default.

3- Then add a "Twist Deformation"
Mine is: Size: 250-250-250 / Mode: Unlimited / Angle: 43'

4- And add a "Taper Deformation"
Mine is: Size: 250-250-250 / Mode: Limited / Strength: -55% / Curvature: 100% / Fillet: Unchecked

5- Then make a copy of this Array object and put a minus (-) in front of "Twist Angle"

Hope it helps..

Sweet! That is brilliant. Another one of those, "Why didn't I think of that" moments.
