in wings3d, when u snap to a point, edge, or face, u dont ha to be on it just close enough forhte snapping to take effect. then u can select whaever it is u r snapping to. but in max it seems like snapping is a purely aesthetic function. it will snap to a point, but u cant select it, not until u r right on top of it.

basically, why even use snapping if u have to be right on it anyways? isnt that the point of snapping?

I am guessing you are talking about 3d snap toggle in max being there is a couple of snaps in the program.

if you turn up the snap strength it will increase the distance you are away before it snaps.

hope that helps.

i did that. it hightlights the edge/vert/face but if u click, it doesnt select it. so if u increase it to 20 or whatever, it will snap to it, but u hav to be right on it to actually select it.

is it like this in all the other apps?

well snapping is not for selecting objects... for selection the cursor has to be right over the object.

but when moving an object across a grid for example you can snap it to grid points without pointing exactly on the point, THIS is where the snap threshold takes effect

no mousing over it will not select it. don't know why you would want that. the point of snapping is usually to make it easier to select.

also for example if you set the snap toggle to vertex and where dragging a vertex around it would snap it to the position of other vertices. just makes your life easier. and the same can be applied if you were to snap to grid points, faces, edges, etc.:lightbulb

i'll give u guys that point. but in wings, u just get close to the vert, it highlights, then u can select it. it makes it a lot easier to see what vert u r close to and about to select. same with faces and edges.
it would help the selecting of various sub objects on a complex mesh. how many tomes have u looked at a wireframe and had to rotate it around just to see what vert u wanted to select? it would seem to help this problem.

thats all i needed though, thanks for the input guys
