Hi everybody,

I am restarting a portfolio to get a job at a game company. I am aiming to get a character modeling job at a company, bu really I just ned a job. So i plan on ubmitting a few characters and maybe one or too non-organic models and having them mapped and textured.

I have a few questions though about what the best way to present them...The first would be are 4 or 5 good models enough? I don't want it to have too much but I don't want to add too little either.
Second I was wondering if it is a big deal if the models are rigged or if it is ok to just pose them?
Thirdly I was wondering what kinds of models would stand out to companies? Is it ok if I make someting like three bipeds or do companies usually want more variety...like a biped, a quadriped, and a spider?

Please, tell me what you think, I really want to get a job.

Well, for the amount of models/quality of models you will need to find a good balance. The quality of them much, much more important than the amount you have. Unless you are going for a position that would require rigging, dont worry about it. That goes especially if you are not too good at it, as it would take away from the quality of the rest of your work. For the models that stand out to companies, it depends on the company. Make sure when you are looking at applying at places you know the types of games they make. If you go for a company that specializes in sports games, they would have no use for quadipeds. I hope this helps you a little bit.

Thank you, that answers my rigging question for sure. I don't think any of the companies I'm looking at are going to need a jack of all trades, they are all big enough where they will have people who speacialize in each area, and I guess it's not that that the end result is not good when I rig a model. It just takes me a hella long time to rig something well:) So maybe I'll skip it and focus on my textures and models more.

As for the amount I'm totally with you on the qaulity over quantity...I also am guessing that a company will not hire me based on a single model, even if it's very well done. Will they? I mean I would think that hiring someone based on a single model would be a bit risky. On the other hand if someone makes a modeling demo of thirty models I would think a recruiter would get bored after bout 6 or 7, and have already decided if you're what they are looking for. So I understand the whole finding a happy medium, butis there a standard amount for a hopeful character artist?

your right about having to many models, doesn't matter how good they are it will get boring, but you don't want to leave them wondering what you can do, from the portfolios ive seen (as someone who has hired) and as someone making there own, 2-5 minutes is a fiarly good time, if its just posed models.. some good 360 rotations and why not include renders in jpeg format as well at a high res, always good to look at the details in a still image.
