Hello,

One of my first posts ever here.

Here's my latest work: a Porsche 993, the best version, GT2. Worked on it for a couple of weeks, on and off.

Used programs:
3D Studio Max 5.1
PhotoShop 7
Illustrator 10

Polycount: More than enough :p *cough* 800k *cough*

Comments are welcome.

Pardon all the images, if it's too much for the 56k'ers, then I'll link them in stead of showing all of it.

REALLY COOL WORK!!!

IT ALL MADE BY 3D MAX COOL

The lighting is excellent in the first two pictures. I didn't even realize for a few moments that the surroundings were CG... they are right? :) I think the pipes gave it away in the second picture. Very nice model. If you make the license plate texture hi-res it would be better. It looks a bit blurry.

Mike: Thanks, Max is the only way for me :D.

G'eye: They are CG, yeah! :) The pipes are uniform, you're right.
And the plate already is high res (1000 x something), don't really know why it blurred it out... I have fooled around with it for quite a while, didn't solve it completely, yet.

nice car and the surroundings, and seems you have made an animation.

wat voor school heb je gedaan? ik wil namelijk ook deze richting op..

frontpage stuff 4 sure!

Yeah very ncie!

But some crit points. The fender (profile) looks like a straight line, the real one is more smooth.
The outer shape of the taillights is a litle bit wrong (lookie http://www.ridejudge.com/rides/00001059.jpg )
The blinker looks a litle bit dark

But....THE last pic is my favorite! Looks very cool :buttrock:

Great model Onno, you really did good job on modlleing details :).

Best looking one is 2nd image IMHO. First image have too much reflection form HDRI you used and it's visible that HDRI is different than car location. On 2nd (rear) shot it has less afected ad it looks great. I like tyre rubber material. Yellow one is also cool but it looks more orange than yellow so i more like black one.

Congrats on great work :).

I like that model alot.

For me you are showing great skills, very realistic rendering. Except on the last one, too much volumetric light, i would tone it down a little. The asphalt on the 1st and 2nd one look pixelated. For the car the 2nd picture is much better.

Great work.

Thanks to all for the compliments and input.

starboard: Hehe, I wouldn't dare, render times aren't that long, ~20 minutes for a 800x600, yet still: I haven't had time enough to make a small animation. I'll definately make some though!

Freestyler: School? No lessons for me, I am self tutored. Studying physics and astronomy at the moment.

Daniel: You might be right about the fender, but do bare in mind that it's a different shape from what you think, almost everybody thinks so: there's an additional part underneath it that I gave a paint material, but is black on some GT2's (as your photo).
See: http://www.maximum-cars.com/Cars/Porsche/1998-911-gt2-r-2.jpg

Lewis: Thanks a lot for the compliments! The yellow one has a lot of volume light and a HDRI specific lighting around it (an orange one, but it only shows through some small windows), so it's a bit darker (= more orangish). Do bare in mind that the yellow version of the GT2 isn't that yellow, it's darkish yellow. You could say light orange! ;)

Dorcus: :D Thanks.

dg3d: The last one is a zoomed version of the pre-last one: there is indeed a lot of volume light, but that's because there are a lot of windows at the top of the hall...
It's not really asphalt, it's a combination of concrete and small rocks, which has become really dirty. The first and second picture do have the same texture for the ground...

Mike + Laodong: Thanks.

just saw that same yellow one, about 15 mins ago, same GT2 that was in the Porsche dealership in my area, this guy was rippin by everyone, such a beauty. Very rare too. Other than that, sweet model, no crits, just your wheels look alittle too big, the ones on the real one were huge, but somefin differen bout yours, anyways keep up the great work man!!!

A excellent work man, this work must be in the gallery of cgtalk. It's really a excellent work. One of the best cars i've seen here... and of course... no doubt... it's modelled in max5...

Reeves:  Good to see ya here. Thanks for the compliments.

Jota: Rare is almost an understatement... only 49 were made, if I remember it correctly. One of the very few cars I haven't seen in real life.
They're huge indeed, the wheels, in fact they're so large that in the real car you can see that they hardly fit into the arches. It's frightening.

Ricola: :)

kRabATh: Thank you.

WhiteBlaizer: Power to the Max, there can be only one app that's the best... J/K guys, I ain't starting a application flame war here. ALL the apps are good, yes even MSPaint...
Thanks for the compliment.

Khang Wei: Of course, here's some wires:
http://home.uva.nl/onno.vanbraam/porsche/cgtalk/wire-fade.gif
http://home.uva.nl/onno.vanbraam/porsche/cgtalk/wheel-wire.gif

 for the compliments to all.

PS: Here you can check all the test renders I made (! WATCH OUT, 3Mb images... !): http://www.onnovanbraam.com/temp/porsche/porsche-911-gt2.php :D

*EDIT: Yes, sorry, forgot about the how-to.
Modeling:
Basic start: I setup the blueprints, made a spline cage (1 hour), and then converted to editable poly. Refined the body so the shape was okay, then made all the creases (all of them in one strike). After that it was all pretty straight forward poly modeling. Certain parts are ultra dense meshwise (the wheels), others were fairly trivial to create, such as the interior, which isn't as detailed as the exterior.

Rendering: I switched between scanline and the lighttracer throughout the project, but in the end created a fakiosity (Skyraiders E-Light) and on top of that a light setup of a couple of omni's (affect specular = off), because it's twice as fast to render and gives a better control over the end result, so 90 backfilling lights.

Some images were post-processed in PhotoShop, but not many, of the test renders you see in the link, only a couple (the last ones) were editted. The others are straight from Max, maybe only cropped a bit.

Looking very good.. my only crits .. and I seem to be the only one that thinks so.. so it's probably me that'swrong.. are the headlights.. they just don't appear to be convincing to me though I can't quite put my finger on why... and the pillar just behind the door which looks wafer thin.. I think giving a bit more depth to that could make the whole side more convincing.   :)

Onno
05-25-2003, 11:30 AM
liQu1d: :) Thanks

xynaria: The pillar does have some thickness (you can see it in the wire shots), but it's indeed thin: that's how it is on the real car.
What you think is wrong with the headlights? Is it the shape, the glass, the inner stuff?

xynaria
05-26-2003, 05:02 PM
I don't know the car so well so I did a search and from the photos I could find I can only say that in the case of the headlights .. its a bit like the side.. it's a perceptual depth thing. As far as I can see.. on 'the real thing' the headlight covers look less clear and have a thickness that appears absent here. The actual light has some detaling that also makes a subtle difference in the way it reads. Still a great model though. :)

ok.. yes this question is simple.. and yes im a noob..

so, whats the deal w/ the thicker lines around the edges of the doors etc? is it just copies of the vertices? i like the result, and it seems like a good idea.. this is the first time ive noticed somebody using it.. can you help me out? maybe closeups of the wire? thanks!

I guess this is the step im a little confused on.. what do you mean by "crease"? is this just copying the vertices? or is there some trick. and then one "stike" (stroke?).. what do you mean..

thanks!

boxcrash: Hehe, yeah it's always nice to see the progress. Especially when you look back at in a year or so.

Psycholink: :) Thanks.

khang wei: I wouldn't say it's tough, it's just a lot of work...

Bjollets: Thanks for the compliments. My website will be updated in a couple of weeks: complete redesign, new content, new blueprints etc.

aor: It's not copying the vertices. What I do is select the edges where I want a crease, chamfer, select the newly created polygons, extrude inwards and then chamfer the edges (so that it doesn't smooth out too much when MeshSmoothing). It's a bit like this (http://www.3dluvr.com/grid/tut3D/tut3d.htm). Too bad I found this tutorials after I created my method! ;)
And by one strike I mean that I create ALL the creases in one move, because if you don't do it that way then they won't form a whole and you'll mesh will get ugly when MeshSmoothing.

Krisc: Lol, no. But thanks for the compliments! :)

dimitrios_c: You don't like MSPaint? Tsk. :p
Funny how everyone likes different parts of different images, that's cool.

facial: ;) Thanks.

spunkman: Rock on. :D

t r u n x z: What do you mean with 'a completed package'? That it's 100% done? There's always more stuff to tweak.

Looks very cool! The one think that disturbs me a bit is the license plate. Perhaps it should be a bit more reflective and have a little bump for the embossment

Onno
05-27-2003, 03:52 PM
Hawfer: :) Lol, because of me? Wow, what a power I have! ;)

wayfaerer: Yeah, the license plate is indeed tricky, as mentioned. I have tried a lot of things today (all the supersamplers, different AA types, nothing really helped), and decided to remove the bump map (yes I already had one), and adjusted the specular and glossiness levels. I think they're better now.

UPDATE:
OMG, someone painted the car blue! Woaa! ;) Came out pretty nice I think. Changed the texture of the pipes and license plates.

As an avid Porsche fan i would have to say exquisete work, it is truly amazing what some people can do, IMHO one of the best vehicle models ive seen, maybe someone should model a Carrera GT since they are simply beutiful LOL (i will give it a shot but to see a pro do it would be stunning) anyway amazing work and congrats

Krisc: Thanks for the nice words (and the nice collection of smilies! ;)).

wazzup: The newer renders are a bit better, I agree.

DSedov: Rims can make or brake a car, I think mine are quite alright, thanks for agreeing. :)
Stop making cars? Hm... the day that will happen is the day I stop 3D'ing. Why is it that I always here people complaining about the amount of cars made and never about how many characters/humans are created? I personally enjoy seeing both of them (certain humans, also called females usually a bit more ;)).

Gremlin: Bah, the GT3! Great car (one of the best if not the best driving cars around nowadays), but not as tough looking as the old 911, IMHO. Thanks for the compliment.

alcapucci: That's nice to hear, I am trying to get there.

aor: Glad I could help you out, creases are indeed a tough one to create, it takes a while to get the hang of it. I agree on what you said: cars are so versatile and have all kinds of semi-organic shapes in them that's a good, if not perfect, exercise for anyone.

mwkmn: Hehe, indeed, I am a car freak too.
It'll be way better I think, my website, currently I am about half way done, so it should take me about 2 to 3 weeks to complete it. :D

PureFire: very much like the real thing
That was the general idea! ;)

Inferno_SPK:  Thanks, that means a lot to me.

Ok this is nice.. but yet again Another car lacks a tire Valve! I mean if your gunna go for realism I instantly look at your wheels.. and I dont see a tire valves there.. that what gives it away :) I mean If I bught this nice car..how Im I suppose to put air in my tires?? unless its pure rubbber :)
