Hi, I'm trying to generate a normal map from 4 high res to 1 low res. I'm getting problems with the pants, swimsuit etc. They only get baked partialy... yet the cage is very offseted from the character....

How can I fix that?

here's an example. on the left is the high res, on the right is the result after baking and aplying the normal map to a copy of the low res.

I would really need to know more about how you have this set up, but I can make a few general suggestions. The first thing I would try is to combine the 4 hiRes models into a single hiRes model.

Do you have Projection Mapping enabled in the RenderToTexture dialog? And if so, do you have it set to use your projection modifier in the dropdown list?

Like I said, I could probably give some more suggestions if I knew more about your setup since there are many many variables.

Yeah, the best way to solve this is to keep fooling around with the settings till you get something that looks right.

Some recommendations

1. Try using xNormal to do the projection. http://www.xnormal.net/
It often does a better job.

2. Make sure your uv layout is nice and clean. Well first make sure you DO HAVE an unwrapper on it. You need uv coordinates for the projection to work.

3. The cage should not extend too far beyond the highpoly. As a matter of fact it should follow its shape quite closely. If you're using 3ds max, under the push controls, lower the percentage until the cage is a tight fit.

4. Try subdividing your low poly and high poly into equal pieces until you get them to project properly. Since it seems like only the torso has the bump, try detaching the torso on both the low and high poly, and then project only that. But don't do things like, keep the full figure low poly, and then project on only the torso from the high poly. That will give you bad results for sure. The two pieces have to be as similar as possible.
