Hey everyone. I'm modeling my first game character in Maya and Zbrush and I've run into a problem. So what I have is: a low poly model (8,000 tri's), Normal map from high poly sculpt, color map, and spec map.

What kind of shader do I need to apply these maps to. I tried a blinn but the model is not smooth from the normal map. I was browsing the web for answers, and I came across Ben Mathis' website. I saw that he had broken down his characters in stages. Like this:

What shader is he using to to get that smoothed look on his low poly model. I noticed when I made my normal map in Zmapper it applied this to my model for previewing purposes, but I thought it just subdivided. Anyway I was wrong. I know this sounds like a newb question, but this is my first time creating a realtime model.

Thank you in advance, and thank you Ben for making me realize this.

If the edges on your character stand out a lot then just smooth the normals. It's an option in the Polygon Tab called Normals > Soften Edge (in Maya 2008). But make sure you select your model first.

Sounds straight forward. I'll give that a try tomorrow when I work on it again. If anyone else has other suggestions, that would be great as well.
