You have some "mesh errors" or what I should call it, like at the mouth.. at the beginning of his lips.. the mesh i very sharp. I don't know what surface tecnique you are using? Maybe it's polygonal surface? .. If it is, try to keep the polygons with 3-4 vertex points that would give you a smother surface.

nice... but he would look better with textures :)...
the sharp edge at the mouth is probably a 3sided poly... use 4 sided instead... (i find 5 sided better than 3 sided because thye usualy give a bit smoother results imho)

I think its time to stop calling yourself a newbie and call yourself intermediate. but what do I know, Im just a newbie...
Im imagining it with textures and I like what I see :)
How about some ears? From the front it looks a bit like a lizard. Keep it!!

it doesn't look hellish and nasty...looks more like a cartoony polar bear right now, but that might just be cause it lacks a texture.

with some horns it would look more "hellish", i think.

I agree with the mesh errors, post a wireframe if you can.
Your form through out is too soft and needs refinement, even if this is meant to be cartoony it will benefit greatly by better definition in the leg and jaw structure.
Currently I would believe this better as a plastic toy than a creature.
You could do with some more reference. Maybe you can get to a natural history museum. Check out some dinosaur feet and legs, bring a sketchbook. If this is not an option go to a library and get some books on dinosaurs, or worst case just do a google images search.
You need more reference to progress with your model, or if you have some good reference you just need to continue refining everything.
post that wireframe.

the name (hellhound) reminded me of this unit from warcraft3 that was called "felhound"

so when you ask me, i always think in this one, and i imagine your monster in red, with horns, and all this stuff...

Try not to directly copy someone elses concept unless you really just want to explore it. When it comes to producing work for a portfolio, your own concept from sketch to model is far more interesting to see. It explains more about you as an artist.

krets: i know, i only said that when i think about this, my brain associates it unvoluntarely with the warcraft one, and i imagine the zkooby monster with some textures, horns... i'm not saying he should copy it, just pick some ideas from one side, other from another side, and a lot of imagination!:p
