View Full Version : ZBrush noob question - symmetry not working in one area
Rebeccak 06-25-2008, 05:17 AM Hello folks,
Excuse my noob question here. ^^
I'm having a weird problem maybe some of you experienced ZBrushers can answer - on the base mesh I'm using, everything will sculpt symmetrically except for the ears - if I'm zoomed in on one ear and the other isn't visible, the other doesn't get sculpted. If I zoom out and both are visible, then they are sculpted symmetrically. This doesn't appear to happen on any of the other features, and I wonder if I'm activating some sort of mask?

I'm using a base mesh from my ZBrush instructor, Scott Spencer. If the current state of the sculpt is bad, it's not Scott's fault. ^^
Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi Rebbecak ,that is a strange problem. If you hide one side it wont get sculpted , the only other thing i can think of is that the model might not be a 100 % centered .

Hey soletorcher (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=254869), thanks for the reply. :) I think I got it worked out, you were right, the base mesh was not symmetrical, which I didn't realize. I did the resym (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=60547) thing and it's back on track. I had assumed the base mesh was symmetrical but I guess you can't tell unless you export it to a 3D program to double check.
Cheers!

Theres plenty of features in zb that are not perfectly symmetry safe, such as the move-brush for per-vertex modification seems to be able to simply miss moving the opposite side in some cases. I think custom brush alphas can do that too.
Not to mention the transpose rotate that rotates your mesh something like 359.9 degrees instead of 360 which the snapping feature implies.
Most of times its your own fault, but who knows when, thank god(pixologic) for the smart resym:D

Rebeccak - I have a thread over at ZBcentral asking for tips on keeping symmetry in ZB3:
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=56896&highlight=symmetry
Hope it is of some use to you. Symmetry appears to be hit or miss at times with this latest version, hopefully it will be solid again by ZB4.
When did you decide to start playing with the program?

Hey Segvoia (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=187858), thanks for the link! :) I just started taking a ZBrush class at Gnomon this past Monday, with all the amazing digital sculptors on the forum I just finally gave in to the peer pressure. ;) That and I've been wanting to take a class there for a long time. I'll definitely check out that link.

Lucky you that you're right in town with Gnomon, enjoy! :applause:

Symmetry works most of the times but it`s a good idea anyway to press the smartresym now and then(after you mask one half of the model). If it doesn`t want to work this way, you could try and fix the unruly polygon(s) with the move tool at the lowest subdivision level. Or try the smart resym at the next higehr level. Or, the ultimate odd solution: press unify and then do the smart resym. The model`s scale might change drastically but it doesn`t matter.
I know you solved the probem already, I hope the stuff I wrote will be of use in the future.
