View Full Version : How to do this? (moving through twisty tunnel with video texture)

I'm a beginner with CGI - I only know Bryce - but the film I'm working on just now could really do with this idea I've had.

The "camera" is moving through a "tunnel" that twists in all 3 dimensions. The texture of the tunnel is taken from a video file, and the video "loops" continuously. This is the kind of stuff I've been wanting to do for a while.

Now I confess I haven't a clue how to do this, so could somebody recommend a program in which I could create what I've described fairly easily? I appreciate that CGI is a craft involving skill and patience, but in this particular instance I just want to get the thing done.

I could make a 3D twisting tunnel in Bryce, but the video texture is impossible with that so obviously a more sophisticated modelling program is needed.

This has been done many times before for the Stargate series using Lightwave 3D.

One way would be to do it in Maya. You could create a nurbs curve and extrude a circle along it, creating your tube. You could then attach a camera to the curve and animate it through the tunnel.

As for the video texture you'd probably be best applying it as an image sequence to the nurbs surface. This would take some playing around with though, getting the UV placement right.
