View Full Version : Toon style Hair
spngebob111 06-24-2008, 01:26 AM Hey guys,
Im trying to model a toon styled hair (pic below) its the type that looks like its being held with super gel and never really moves. I have a head but Im not sure where to go from there, what would you guys suggest as the best course of action for the two similar styles?

a nice displacement map might just do, bring the scalp to zbrush and paint it. Hope it helps

Thats some pretty funky hair osamu, I like you youhave done there.
I have been trying to find a nice way to do hair for as long as I have been trying to model hair. Always looking for the easy way out, and the other day I finally figured it out! there is not easy way out :( you want good hair it just takes time sadly.
With regards to your head predicament, I would try copying the polys on the head that will have hair and put them into a new object or layer. Tweak them to fit the style and then extrude and tweak some more. You could probably get a nice simple hair "block" with that one and it will work fine for what you need.
Thats how I did this guys hair then I just did a few extrudes to form the curls on the end.

Hey spngebob111 glad you liked the model, here are some more indepth instructions. Its not exactly rocket science and you won't win any awards for it I am sure but it might get you the look you want and with a bit of effort you might be able to tweak it into something useful.
1. Select the polys of your object that you want the hair to cover (See Fig 1 (http://www.whoisthefreak.com/images/tutorials/1.jpg))
2. Copy them to a new object or layer (See Fig 2 (http://www.whoisthefreak.com/images/tutorials/2.jpg))
3. Tweak the points and polys to get the shape of the hair and scale them down under the scalp (See Fig 3 (http://www.whoisthefreak.com/images/tutorials/3.jpg))
4. Extrude the polys out of the scalp to the required length (see Fig 4 (http://www.whoisthefreak.com/images/tutorials/4.jpg))
5. Tweak them a little more into the style you want (see Fig 5 (http://www.whoisthefreak.com/images/tutorials/5.jpg))
Thats about it, its a simple way to get simple hair. You can then UV it and texture it and use disp maps and bump maps etc to make it look a little better.
Not sure if thats what you wanted to know or not but hopefully its useful
Cheers
