View Full Version : After Effects isn't playing the music I imported
loempiavreter 06-23-2008, 10:18 PM I use After Effects 7.0
When I import an mp3 file into After effects, it doesn't work (I place it into the timeline press play and I don't hear anything). I clicked on the sound icon in the timeline (the one next to the eye and the dot) but that doesn't work.
How can I solve this?

Alas... AfteEffects dows not support playback of .mp3 audio files. Recommend you convert your audio file to .aiff or .wav.

I've never experienced an issue with playing back mp3s.
You can't however just from the straight play/pause button. You with need to do a RAM preview playback.

As mentioned by erilaz, AE does not play sound in realtime. You need to generate previews. An audio-only preview can be initiated with the comma on your numpad, a full RAM preview for audio and video using 0 on the numpad. To hear audio while scrubbing, hold down Ctrl.

The problem is I don't have a numpad on my laptop?
Is there a way to change the shortkeys?

You can still click the RAM preview button on your control panel. It's to the far right of the play controls.

There's a script on Adobe Exchange called KeyEdUp that allows you to change keys from within AE. Otherwise feel free to edit the shortcuts file manually. On Windows it can be found under
C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\8.0
The directory in question is a hidden system directory, so adjust your Explorer view settings. On Macs it's in
Users:[user]:Library:Preferences:Adobe:After Effects:8.0
Look for an entry called "Preview" in the many sections of the shortcuts file. You can assign keys you don't need regularly. I for instance have assigned Ctrl+F1 on my MacBook because I never hide the toolbar (which it is the default key for). Just don't forget to unassign it from the original shortcut.
