View Full Version : Correct modeling for deformations.
ToastMan 06-23-2008, 10:26 AM I have modeled this character and I'm interested in posing it using biped. I have modeled characters before but when I applied the biped to them, some areas in the model wouldn't deform correctly (mainly stomach area and fingers) which is probably because of incorrect modeling. So this time, I thought it would be better to check to see what others think of the wire and hopefully would be able to foresee deformation problems.
So I have attached screenshots of my model from all angles plus closeups on the hands. Any help would be appreciated.

And hand.
Damn 3 attachments per post limit ;)

or you could use imageshack...
a nice site for deformation is http://www.pig-brain.com/index.htm, dunno if you allready know about it, but it has some clear tutorials about deformation.

That's a great site, thanks!
I would still love to get specific comments on my model as well though, so anyone can still feel free to post some.

Well, your fingers won't be bending at all.
The next area of concern for me would be the shoulder/armpit area.
The knees/elbows are interesting, I'm unsure what will happen with them. I could probably make them work, but the modeling is a little unorthodox.

what he said, also the side of the neck looks rather stretched and thin, might make some unwanted shrinking happening there as well.
And I don't think the biceps/elbow combination will work very well, but I can't really say I'm certain about that. It looks a little unorthodox isall, and maybe you can get it to work, I don't know.
Edit: you probably meant pig-brain is a great site, but about imageshack, the advantage to using it is it doesn't eat away your attachment space, and you're not limited to using those images only at cgtalk.

Those tutorials are pretty cool, but I noticed that he was using a whole bunch of triangles in his mesh. I've always avoided them in favor of strict quads, but are the ones he's using considered ok?

There's nothing wrong with Triangles, you just have to know how to use them (Triangles are used frequently in games to help with deformations). Besides, everything renders out to tris anyways. Strict Quads came from an older method of deformation where any tris would ruin your mesh. Nowadays, it isn't as stringent.
Don't get me wrong though, I prefer the model to be 95% or more quads.
