Alright guys and gals...
I feel I need some help with modeling as a whole. My intrest in this industry's pipeline is animation, and I feel like I'm a competent rigger/animator. However, all of the models I have made so far were done in essence to "beat a deadline", so I didn't really get to practice good modeling techniques, including pre-modeling setup and research. I have one hedgehog model that is about 50,000 polys (without smoothing :surprised ) but I'm sure, besides making it ridiculously heavy, that I didn't use good modeling techniques like edge looping and low poly count. My original intent for that model was to make it how I wanted it, then convert to subds, but if anyone here has tried to convert a 50,000 base poly mesh to subds, you'll chuckle just like I did.
Right now I am starting a new project just to try to correct my technique and get more practice modeling smarter. I'm currently using Wiro's tutorial as a base for my practice, but I was wondering just what kind of things I should learn where I wouldn't need to follow a tutorial every time I wanted to make a quality model? I realize the question must seem broad and loaded, but when I see the kind of amazing work posted here, and knowing I am capable of learning how to create something like that of my own, sometimes it's hard to see through the excitement and expectation to figure out where to begin. Most people want to just rush right into it, and I'm trying hard to keep from making that mistake. At least now I'm not burdened with school deadlines, so I can really spend the time I need to improve myself. Any help you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated!! And as soon as I get some WIPs going, I'll be sure to post them (and probably profusely thank you all again for helping :) ). Thanks!
ps. Yes, I have read all the tutorials in the sticky threads. :p
