View Full Version : Split NURBS with curves?
victor 05-23-2003, 08:32 PM I need to split a NURBS surface into multiple pieces with curves on that surface. Basically, imagine a rectangle with two lines on it, splitting it into 3 pieces, and I want to create 3 separate objects.
I've always done something like this by trimming three copies of the original one at a time, but I have a pretty complicated situation, and feel there must be a more "correct" way that invloves less steps.

OK, of course "keep original" helps, but it still requires several steps on a complex object. Is there a way to just say "cut this into a bunch of pieces with the curves" all at once?
not sure i understand what you trying to do exactly but, how about:
edit nurbs>detach surfaces?

I was wondering about this to. I think he means that he wants to trim a surface, yet instead of removing the trimmed parts, just simply separate them into different objects. Instead of having to duplicate the object and trim it twice (or however many times), hes looking for an easier way.

^ Exactly.
I ended up doing it manually for each piece with the "keep original" option checked. It wasn't so bad. :)
Actually, what I needed to do was apply different materials to a NURBS surface that would be separated by curves on that surface (just like applying different materials to selected polygons), but I don't suppose that's possible without having them as separate objects, right?
couldnt you just use detach surfaces to do this?

Since you're repeating that, I'm assuming you see something I don't.
AFAIK, detach surfaces can only break a surface at isoparms. I need to be able to do it at a an arbitrary curve on the surface (the kind you get from projecting curves or intersecting surfaces). Am I wrong?
ahh ok,
i thought when you said that you had lines going across the surface that divided it uniformly like isoparms
sorry
