Here's a recent illustration I did for the box cover to Summoner: A Goddess Reborn. Critique is much appreciated. The image is just under 200k so if you're on a dial-up connection, it may take a minute or two.

Thats some beautiful texturing man

the light coming from her hand is too distractive imho , i want to focus on the figure but cant. Just nitpicking.

Thanks for the comment/compliment. :) Without the title, it is a bit hot. Here's a slightly different version with the title of the game which I hope makes more sense out of the composition:

I needed a very bright backdrop for the title, but maybe I overshot. I do that all the time :hmm:

Thanks again for the comments!

:wow.... is that 2d or 3d? can't really tell, you can take that as a compliment :)...

anyway... looks great, but i agree about the light... it distracts alittle...

edit: ahh, i see you posted anothe image while i was replying :)...
that makes much more sense now... the text "covers" the light intensity...

again: great job

Wow. The modelling and texture of the character look awesome! Do you have a seperate thread for her?

Anyway, it does look a lot better with the text there.

It's actually both 2d and 3d. The figure and column/arches are 3d elements, while the light ray's and effects were painted in Photoshop. The stars were also a photoshop element. The 3d elements were modeled in Mirai and Max... the figure in Mirai, and the background in Max. I don't have another thread for the character, but you can see model sheets and more of her at my website if you like.

Anyway, so it looks like I'll have to figure a way to tone down the light effect to make the image work better as a stand-alone piece of art. Thanks for the comments. :)

Summoner: A Goddess Reborn was released this last spring in the U.S. I don't know when they will release it in Europe or other countries.

It's pretty much the same as Summoner 2 on the PS2 but for some reason THQ re-named the game for the Gamecube.

::And now for the plug::

For an RPG it's really not a bad game (personally, I usually prefer shooters on the PC). It got decent ratings by most reviewers... (not like Britney's Dance Beat.... man that was brutal).

Pick it up if you can

::End of plug::

Very nice image

The columns in the BG tp the right look a little distracting to me. I think they should be there, but maybe not so blurred.

I also think the image could use a little more contrast to help it pop. Her shadow side could use a little darkening to help pull out the rounded shapes from the blazing hot hilight sides.

Very cool image

THQ? That use to be Rainbow? I thought about applying there awhile back.

You have a point there about making the darker half darker still.
I'll see what I can do. Rainbow Studios (where I work) is now owned by THQ.

wow! This one is looking really sweet! To put it simple, i totally dig the flashy lights in the composition. The bright colors mite seem distracting at first, but seen as a whole they fit the scene just perfect.

This is absolutely beautiful. i really dig the freckles on her chest. adds that tinge of realism to her. her mastoids seem a bit too defined though. Just my 2 cents worth.

Great work!:buttrock:

Thanks for the comments.

Dom, by mastoids, you mean the sterno-mastoid right? I know that could be better, at least in the shape of the muscle/tendon and where it connects with the sternum. I could flatten it out a bit higher up on the neck, but down low at least all my reference of lean models shows a lot of definition in that area while in that pose. The muscle and tendon displaces the skin quite a distance. I'll look some more...thanks for bringing that up.

In addition to this image, I'm hoping to have two more done this week sometime. I'll post them as I finish them to the point of needing critique.

Thanks again,

-Boyd

It's hard to say, because I don't know much about how much freedom you had, but the outfit she's in is terrible. It would be easily sorted by flattening the level of the top of that trouser/thong nastiness.

I would also say the breasts have been modelled wrong, especially around the top outside edge.

You guessed it... I had no say in her costume. The design of both main characters for the Summoner2 releases was a bit different, but the cool thing about them is that you'll never see the same design anywhere else... that made it fun even if they might have been risky or odd. I was grateful at least for this design vs. the design Volition used for the Playstation version, which has a lot more "stuff" like armour and material etc. which would have taken more time to model and deal with in the illustration.

Anyway, I was handed the low res character and asked to create a high res version for the cinematics and cover assets... and later to create the cover. The character design was done before it got to me. On the breasts, I'm reasonably satisfied with how they look, though the appearence of breasts has so much to do with packaging that they can be a challenge to deal with as a character modeler...especially when you get duelling opinions about size, shape etc.. The best thing I've found to do is get the opinion of women, since they have to deal with them and are much more in tune with how they should look than men will be. That goes with the rest of the female figure as well.

She's gorgeous :)

Love her face and breasts. Not the composition I'd ideally like to see her in, but I think it's appropriate for a cover. I actually like the top half of her costume, but her leggings remind me too much of spidey's outfit :).

Checked out some other work on your site, amazing stuff man....can't wait to see some of your WIP's completed.

Incredible work. That's pretty close to photorealistic, at the same time as being very visibly cg (in a good way). Awesome.

That's absolutely incredible!! I for one love the character design, and the blinding light is great, I wouldn't tone it down at all. The contrast in the last image is much better, however the colours almost seem too intense now. I would try working on just darkening the extremely shadowed areas, rather than multiplying(darkening) the whole character.

Beautiful Work!

Thanks! I'll work a bit more with the saturation/lighting. I'll post again soon.
