hey folks,

just finished writing a new tutorial yesterday. This one is a 2-part deal, the first part dealing with creating your own HDRI map using a mirror-ball, a digital camera, and Hdrshop. The second part is about properly using that hdri in max (both for lighting and for reflections) with the aid of the splutterfish HDRI import plugin (free) and the brazil public test version (also free).

Just a side note, but my site host has gotten a little flakey recently, so if anyone has a problem accessing the tut, just wait a little while and try again :)

anyhow, if anyone gets confused at any point, please let me know so i can clarify things or change anything i screwed up ;)

the first part (hdri creation):

and part 2 (hdri use in max):

i assume you mean on the mini in the pic at the end of the tut, and that is actually the brazil car paint shader. but using a brazil test material or raytrace material, the main point is to use a falloff map in teh reflection slot. then set the falloff type to fresnel and the set the IOR of that fresnel to about 2.0-2.5 or so. that should give you proper reflections.

also note that you can download the max files for the demo scene in the tut, which have similar materials already set up :)
