View Full Version : modeling: meshsmooth middle line
JabzX 05-23-2003, 04:24 PM This is a newbie question, but I've been using Max 4 from sometime and have upgraded to 5. Whenever I create one half of an object then slice it to mirror it, there is always a middle line betreen the two meshes moving outward.
It's very annoying, but have been dealing with it till now.
I use the box method when modeling:
1. create a box
2. set the number of divisions
3. apply edit mesh modifer
4. slice modifier
5. mesh smooth modifier
6. mirror the object
Is my technique a bad one? I'm self tought so I'm prone to do things rather inefficiently.
Thanks-

You're technique is fine, if not now outdated.
Max5 now has somthing called the "Symmetry Modifier". Just cut your mesh in half and then apply the modifier. Pick your mirror axis, and make sure it Auto welds the seam. Just keep "show up stack" on, and you can work on one side and the other is instantly mirrored, and the seam welded for you.
It's one of my favorite new features.
Give it a try.

Personally, I would just select hafl of the faces and delete them, Im not sure but im guessing the problem is coming from the slice modifier/meshsmooth.
and now that you have max 5, why not just delete half of the model, then apply the new "symmetry" modifier? it works well,

Thanks peeps, I didn't know about the Symmetry Modifier. I'll start using that as soon as possible.:bounce:
By the way, I did delete the extra faces of the mesh before I mirrored- I forgot to say that (that was the point of the slice modifier).
Happy Maxing!
