Title: Movies Are My World
Name: Courtney Hoskins
Country: USA
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

This was a project I built for myself. I wanted a nice background image for my blog. I love film and am an astronomy buff, so I wanted to create an image that was reflective of that. This gave me an excuse to get to know Maya's texturing and shading networks, as well as play with mental ray and lighting setups. Creating the transparent film strips gave me a bit of a headache, but I figured it out in the end. I created the images in Photoshop (most of it from scratch, paying meticulous attention to the details- sprocket hole size, soundtracks, etc.) and added a slight bump to create the illusion of film emulsion. I welcome critique. I'm still a bit of newcomer to all of this (about a year and a half in Maya), but I'm learning!

This is really beautiful. I love the surreal quality of the image.

Thanks for the compliments! I'd be curious to hear why it got three one star votes, though. Personal tastes? If it's technical, I'd like to know how to improve my work. I'm still kind of new to Maya.

Hmm...I didn't rate it, but...if I could improve something...I guess it would be the composition "artistically". Your avatar is the same as this, it looks cool because the composition is tighter. Umm...with the full image, it starts well in the top left corner. Nice lighting, effects, then it starts to fade out more and more throughout the image. Kind of a gray color. If you could give the overall image a little more light or color (I call it "POW") to help it stylistically, then that would be good. Just my opinion though, I haven't worked with Maya at all. Oh, technically it's great. The strips of film are awesome with the spheres. Nice! :)

Thanks for all of the great feedback! Yeah, I can see how I might lose points for the composition. Maybe I should do another render with a different composition. It was originally created as a background image for a blog: http://www.quartzfilms.com/blog

I didn't want to cut off the image with the text or have the image interfere with the reading, so there were practical reasons for keeping the more interesting stuff where it is. That's a good thing for me to keep in mind, though, with future gallery postings! ;)

I like your landscpes, too, by the way. I checked them out last weekend. Cool stuff!
