Hello!
I created a little duck (yes, i'm a Maya-noob) end i created at first the body, after this the legs and the arms and at least the head. I always combined the seperate surfaces (arms/legs/...body) and merged the vertices, it worked fine with the arms and the legs but after smoothing the whole character there was a failure with the head:

why is there this "unsmooth line/corner"?

Thanks,

Benedikt

PS:
What should i do at first? Smooth the figur->Mapping or Mapping->Smooth??
thanks

there could be a number of different problems here.

those faces directly around the hardened edges may be reversed.

the points may not really be welded (i've had it happen before even tho I was sure I welded everything).

something I always do to have a visual check on where (if there are any) there are seams that need welding on my meshes is this:

Pick the mesh with the issues. Go to Display > Custom Poly Display (option box). In this window you should make sure your "Highlight Border Edges" is toggled on, and then make your border width at least 3. Once you hit the apply button (or apply and close) the mesh will then show thicker lines wherever there are seems that need closing or welding.

if these fail, I've always found that if I export my mesh as a .dxf, then re-import it, just doing that always fixes a ton of issues with my mesh.

Hopefully this helps some.

maybe they are reversed just as sithwarlord said. u can check it by displaying the normals. Display -> normals

about the mapping i'd map before smoothing. Because you'll shure have to move a lot of Uvs around when mapping an organic model and you don't want to move hundreds of them. Just the most important ones. But u need to have a good or fine mesh tough to do this. because if you map a dice and smooth it then you'd have some errors. But when mapping a very defined low poly mesh u won't have this kind of problems.

Thanks, sithwarlord and Phwhitfield - you helped me very much ;)
Yes, i didn't weld everything correctly, that was the problem :p
@Phwhitfield, i think to understand now when i have to smooth, thank you ;)

hey biscut, i would aslo makek sure to clean up your model. using the ...cleanup in polygons. im not sure if someone said that already but. do that also. i also have my merge verticies value at

.01 that way if some vert is pretty close to another it wont weld. it basically just merges whats touching . i think once you get to know maya your will learn to have everything connected as you go along. maybe some of that helps, hope so .

ciao
