View Full Version : Alphas and textures

Hello

I have been working on a series of objects that are just planes with alpha based textures. I was obviously not getting shadows based on my alpha textures but just rectangular shadows from the planes I was applying the textures to.
Obviously same thing for DoF.

But now I just found a project that has an alpha texture applied to a polygon, and in effect I am seeing the shadows behave as I would want...
What is the trick to making this happen?

Thanks
Alex

That is how they work as normal unless you don't have a high enough shadow depth set under your render settings.

I figured it out, I needed to convert the planes to polygons, and, not sure if it helped, but I also made sure the planes only had one subdivision.

Thanks

What you did, makes no difference at all. It's all about ray and shadow depth.

That is strange, because before I did what I did all I was getting was rectangular shadows. I didn't change anything in the ray depth or shadow depth.
Same thing with DoF. Something must have happened in the process of or reducing the subdivision of the plane, or converting the plane to poly

Could you perhaps post an example file (with textures, if not commercial)? As the others stated, subd etc should not influence/determine the outcome in this case. Please, also mention the c4d version you are working with.
