Hi,
Is it possible to do fake furs with shaders. dosn't have to be perfect cause it's not for close-ups.

Cheers!

Hi,

I think there are some experimental shaders out there. Paul Everett did some beta plug that tried to do some fur. Don't know wether it worked or not. There is a very basic fur shader, too, on MotionGimmick's web site. But, this is not for free I fear. And you already know about Hair Department wich does some polygonal hair, don't you?

Another possibility might be to use DiTools' DiSplineGen in together with Solid Spline pro.

If you want to have some basic fur appearance without using plugins try this:
Do some duplicates of your object and scale them a bit using the Face Extrude command with all faces selected. Create some kind of onion skins for your object. Then apply a material with some nice 3D noise in the alpha. This way very short fur appearance might be accomplished.

Check the velvet material topic (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56630&perpage=15&pagenumber=2). Might be a good start.

Even better is pupi's texturing tutorial (http://market.renderosity.com/~cinema4d/C4Dexercise/zebra.zip)

Hi again!
Thanks for the help, I wiil check out the tennisball shader and Pupis tutorial. I do have the Hair Dep. plugin but since the object that will have the fur only is going to be a small part in a much bigger scene i can't have the render time and unfotunally I can't afford shave right now. Thanks again for all the help!
Cheers

Howdy MWA,

If the item that needs the fur is small or far away, an image map of fur will work fine and render very quickly. You can also create a greyscale image from one of the color channels, boost the contrast and use that as a bump map to help give it the illusion of fur.

Adios,
Cactus Dan
