View Full Version : Batch file output?
mjkennedy 06-19-2008, 06:38 PM Hi, I have a ton of BMP files that I want to turn into PNG files. Does anyone know if Photoshop has a batch file-output, so that I don't have to save them out individually?
Thanks,
Matt

Yup, the process you want to use is called actions. This menu sits above the layers palette. I don't use it to often so it would probably be best to read up on how to do it, because I am probably going to point you in the wrong direction, and particularly considering I don't have a copy of PS at the moment.
Basically if memory serves me right, what you do is create a new action in the action palette, then there is a record button which you click to start recording. Start doing the process of converting files, on just one of the files and when done click the record button again to stop recording when finished. You will have just created an action, which you can apply as you wish.
You may be able to automate the whole process ffrom opening file, to convert, to saving out put, on all the images in a particular folder with just applying the action you have created, basically a one click process for the whole job, once the action is built. However I could be wrong on that because as I said, I just dont know the tool well enough.
I do know that you could just apply the action to each file and turn the process into basically a one click process for each file.
There are plenty of tutorials out there on how to do this that could advise you alot better than I can. But actions are the way to go when it comes to doing something that you have to repeat alot of times.

mjkennedy, hi,
what PS version do you use?
in PS CS3 (and if I am not wrong, for CS2 this works as well) you can use even a little bit more simple way how to do it, using File/Scripts/Image Processor ..
this should work well for you,
if youŽll have any questions, feel free to ask ..

Hey Matt,
Actions are perfect this kind of thing. I'm always using them. Actions have been in Photoshop since v.5, so you pretty safe there. You'r sure to have had a surf to check the many online 'how-to's but there are some points that you need to remember.
1. Begin recording your Actions when you already have one file open. If you record the opening of the file, it will always open that file. Doh!
2. Dig down into some web research. You can have the BMP file saved PNG files, any other changes you need in the files, as well as image name changes, sizes, color modes, destination folder(s), watermarks etc, done in a batch move for hundreds of images, in a fraction of the time.
3. Also research 'droplets'. You can drop whole folders onto these and have the contents dealt with while you get on with other things. File>Automate>Create Droplet... [select action' etc...

For quicker and easier way I use freeware named 'easy thumbnails'. The quality is not perfect but it works very good for some kind of quality-does-not-matter jobs.
