View Full Version : Pete Draper - VFX Reel - April 08 (v02)
PeteDraper 06-19-2008, 12:25 PM Hi guys ... finally, after two years(!!) managed to re-update my reel!!
This is a tweaked version of the one I showed at Red Stick, hence the April reference, which also contains some samples of work going into the next DTE book.
Just realised... first time I've actually posted a reel link on here...!

I've got a sneaking suspicion that the publisher is gearing up for an online version of the book (I think they've done it with the 2nd edition, but don't quote me on it), so you should be able to get it as an e-book.

Hey man very nice demo reel. I was wondering what did you use for bullet+glass effect? i mean did you use any specific plugin? and for the tornado(i loved that), yet again, what did you use? or is it pure particle flow ? :) thanx a lot
PeteDraper
06-24-2008, 12:47 AM
nope, the bullet through glass was pure vanilla max (reactor & pflow), apart from the renderer which was ART VPS's PURE using renderman shaders, purely due to the sheer amount of raytraced particles and depth of field. Mental Ray had a bit of a nightmare with it. It could do with a a bit of revisiting now with the new mr engine as I'm not 100% happy with the bullet materials.
The majority of the reel has been produced without plugins, quite simply due to the clients I was working for not having access to them, therefore had to think outside the box for the most of it. The tornado sequence is the result of a tutorial in my next book - again 100% max with no plugins; just a touch of scripting and comping in combustion, but an absolute ton of particles all feeding into one main debris system. It's actually a butchered version of a system I've been r&d'ing on and off for the last year or so in my "spare time" which is mostly procedural and deals with scene geometry masses and materials, so weight, planting and debris can be procedurally generated. I'll more than likely release that in some form in the future... either as a big tutorial or a dvd set. Not sure yet as it's only about 65% finished.
Cheers!

Amazing! Just wondering, did you name your next book? What's it gonna be? Deconstructing Everything? :P
edit - AH, its the Third Edition! :P just found it on Amazon. Be quick please ! :P
PeteDraper
06-24-2008, 01:21 AM
churning it out as fast as I can... but don't want to scrimp on the quality aspect of it. I'll be glad to see it finished too (as will my editor!!). Currently re-visiting a scene I'd already "finished" - ball o fire - check the particle flow thread for a still frame example, but I'm not 100% happy with it, so making a few tweaks before I write it up.
cheers!

100% brand new tutorials this time around
That officially makes DTE v.3 my most anticipated book of the year! Man, thanks so much for making this stuff, and double thanks for doing it without plug-ins!
And, for the record, I know Maya users who have bought your book simply for the way you break down a real world thing and analyze it's every element. Observation is such a huge part of visual effects and copying real world things, and your book has pretty much the best observations and breakdowns published. It in fact TEACHES people how to observe things with the intent of recreating them.
Hahahaha... your reel is pretty much a teaser trailer for the book. You're going to start a trend - book trailers!

alex - wotcha! cheers chief.. long time no heary :) Hope yer doing well at hayes and say hi to alex morris for me :)
jedi-juice - yeah it could do with some additional particle debris around the base, snaking up the funnel; this particular one is the result of a tutorial I've written, so has a limited amount of particles for safety, though adding in an additional afterburn / fume pass is quite simple as the entire thing is in layers anyway
madhatfx & biliousfrog - sorry about the .wmv format. If you're running a windows system you should just be able to stream it down (the 3d-palace server is pretty quick), plus the file is only 17mb. If anyone wants one, I'll see if I can chuck up a quicktime file before I chip off to glasto :)
Cheers!
Pete
PS biliousfrog - there's still tons of tickets available apparently, so nope it wasn't me. Apparently the turnout this year ain't as high as last year, more than likely due to the weather last year, but some are blaming it on the sat headline act (jay-z). I couldn't care less either way... I'm still going for a good laugh and the lightsaber battle on thurs night :D:D:D

How can such an amazing and wonderful work of animation, talent, skill, and labor be ruined in one stroke?
Add Billy Corgan's annoying, whining, crybaby voice to it, that's how!
Well, I'm only half-serious... As much as I scorn his "singing", the volume was easily turned down, and the rest of the reel was awesome and jaw-dropping. Great work, you're amazing!

Thanx a million for posting man.
your site is a real resource for help to people like me. it always has been, and it always will be.
And the same goes for your books too.
and if the new volume has 100% new tutorials there is nothing stopping it to be the most wanted book out there when it gets released(atleast in max cirlcles).

Hello Pete. You have really nice reel there
Me and my girlfriend are fans of your 3D World tutorials. We even visited Bristol few weeks ago. I wanted to buy "Deconstructing The Elements" from there. Sadly they did not have it in shop. And ordering would take around 7 days. (i was only for 5 days )
But now i think that maybe i should wait a litte bit and buy the third book from amazon. I am very exited about that tornado scene. :D
Anyway great reel. Looking forward for your new book and work :)

Hi Pete!
I have one question about tornado from your reel. How to make house elements (objects) to inherit motion from other particles (debris or dust). Did you have to use PF Box#1 or #3 to do that?
Thanks in advance!
PeteDraper
07-16-2008, 04:28 PM
Hi tasiek,
nope it was totally vanilla max; the objects are actually baked using using a Script Operator and a derivation of the forces used to control the dust & debris particles so it all ties in together.
This scene is pretty much a cut-down version of a system I'm developing that automates the entire process (albeit from a few floater control) and bakes out one big simulation complete with correct geometry & particle interaction. Unfortunately it's on hold at the moment due to not having anough free time because of the book development, though the scene that's in the reel will be part of the next book. How much (ie do i just cut out the comp work and/or provide the pre-baked geometry and an additional file to pull apart etc) I'm not honestly sure at the moment as it depends on space - I'm leaving that one till last as it's a biggie and will take up a lot of paper!!

07-16-2008, 09:16 PM
thanks very much for fast reply. I was hoping that you solved it without scripting :(
Any tips on working this out by operators?
thx!
btw.
When can we expect your new book ? Good luck with it!

Great reel - the one shot that gets me is the diver's air bubbles.
It's got such a nice motion to it, and I'm not sure what Pete has done to get that.
I've been messing around with a simple PArray spawning off a rotating torus to get the roll, and presumably there's some metaball(ache) going on. But I'm so far off what he's got it's not even funny :)

It's one of the tutorial results in the new book, but it's relatively straight-forward if you have a look at reference material. Simply put it's a case of having a couple of global forces (wind) to affect the motion, then have one main particle which spawns off other particles radially. As they travel outwards they scale down which generates the initial hemispherical bubble. As they progress to the outer edge (scale test) they are tested for steering rate of change to see if they should be torn off. If so, they try to find other torn-off particles and the original air bubble mass. It's not perfect, in the way that the particles don't re-join the main mass (they find it, but aren't removed afterwards, but this could be a simple case of an additional Keep Apart operator and speed test).
The entire thing is surfaced with a blobmesh (eugh) but the key thing here is getting the correct IOR value for the bubbles. Bear in mind that all given IOR values are those which are viewed in air, therefore as we are viewing the bubbles in a different medium we need to calculate the correct interface (transition of light from one medium to the next) for viewing air within water, not the other way around.
Pete
Edit: additionally, the rotational motion in footage is produced by the air travelling through the water, creating turbulence. This therefore causes the torn-off bubbles to travel faster vertically than other bubbles (eg smaller particular bubbles) outside this turbulence area. Again, you really need to study footage to break down the process, then it's a simple case of simulating one event after another with multiple tests to see if a condition arises (eg steering rate for tear-off particles) or not.
PeteDraper
07-20-2008, 07:26 PM
tasiek - it'll be out in the states in october and elsewhere about november. We're (myself and the publisher) are currently taking the book in a new direction with regards to delivery methods. More on that later once I post the entire list of tutorial results on my site which should be in a week or so.
The scripting is quite basic and is mainly used to bake out geometry animation referenced from a particle system (or three). It's about the biggest one out there... when I've taught it in workshops it's taken a full day just to produce the debris system.
