This is the completed matte that will be used as the background in a character painting I am working on..... technically not a WIP.. forum moderators don't kick me out... I feel the enviro stands on it's own as a finished piece.

Anyway, the image was modelled in Maya, textured in Painter, and rendered in Mental Ray with a simple GI setup using the camera's environment color as the single light source.

The ground is a bit dodgy but much of it will be covered by further painting so I wasn't too worried about detailing it out just yet.

Comments and Critiques welcome, as always.

The lightning is good but I belive that the rightdown side can be made better... You can see it to much that it is bumpmapped... And If I am wrong, that it really is done by modelling, then Im shocked.

And you should have an eye on the seams and alterations/transitions from ground, wall and doorsill.

Thanks for the crits, excellent points both.

I've done a few minor tweaks taking in to consideration both your crits as well as some suggestions from others outside the forum. lessening bump mapping slightly, attempting to make the wall / ground seams less abrupt and finally adding a quick 2D noise layer in PS.... I replaced the old image with the new one so no comparison is available.. sorry.. trying to conserve server space.

I am desperately trying to avoid the temptation to endlessly tweak and tinker the image so I am moving on to designing a character to place in the piece making it a more interesting painting compositionally.....

Once again, thanks for the crits.
