View Full Version : Merging polygons?
Cyborgguineapig 05-23-2003, 03:30 AM Simple question here. Is there a way to Merge polygons into one polygon to optimize a model. For example, Lightwave has a merge polygons function which can change many polygons on one face into one merged polygon. I have not been able to find a way in Cinema yet to do this. I do know about the bridge trick mentioned in the tips and tricks section but it just doesn't apply to some parts of the model. For example, I want to change a flat face on the model containing like 30 polygons and want to change it into 1 polygon total.
Thanks

C4D does not have ngon (ie. polygons with more than 4 sides) support, the best you can do is hide the interior edges.

you'll find many plugins there, i have found a few others that do this too, but i can't remember them offhand. the plugin here that does the job is called mergequadrangles
you can also go the route of selecting all the interior points of your polys and welding them, then weld the edge points to a corner along each edge till you have one big quad, then finally weld the single interior point to one of those corners... the main problem you're going to have ot overcome is as pointed out before cinema doens't support polygons with more than four points or sides... so this single large poly you make has to be a four sided polygon... and that's not the same as merely being square in shape, it can't have any extra points in the middle of it's sides.
