View Full Version : Pixel aspect ratio
JockeP 06-18-2008, 01:22 PM Hi!
I have some rendered 3D images in squarepixels and some cameraphotage with dvcpro hd 1,33 pixel ratio.
Is there a correct to put these together?
Right now Im stretching the 1,33 photage to 75% in the x-dimension to match them. Will that screw up something further down the pipeline or is it ok to do it this way?

I'm not exactly clear what you are doing. Scaling is always suspicious. You should not need to scale the footage. If you drop it into a correctly sized composition along with your rendered imagery, AE should automatically do all the necessary PAR conversions based on its interpretation rules.

Well, I have imported a xml file from FCP with all the photage. That creates a composition with 1.33 pixel aspect ratio, everything looks fine here.
Then Ill create another composition for the 3Dimages and that comp is square pixels(same size on comp 1280x720). If I just drag and drop any clip into the new comp, it get stretched. Same thing if I copy-paste it from the first comp(this is the way I want to do it since I get the in and outs)
So if I stretch the material 75% it looks good, but it doesnt feel right...

control + f, that will open up the "interpret footage" options, in there just make sure the footage PAR is set to Square Pixels. You may have already tried this. Not sure. But if not, that should do it for you.

Umm, I don't quite get why you think the "stretch" is wrong. "Un-squeezing" the FCP clips is exactly what is supposed to happen when dropping them into a square ratio comp. It may not look pretty in the comp preview (since it isn't antialiased), but it's technically proper procedure and will yield the correct result on rendering. Please read up on pixel aspect ratio correction in the AE manual. It's all explained there and since you have FCP, you can also find lengthy chapters about this in the FCP manual, DVD Studio Pro and Motion.

Thanks for the tip, it worked. :)
Mylenium:
When I tried rendering out the clip with 1.33 PAR it still missed 25% of the background since it was stretched out on the sides.
I will read up on PAR but not in the FCPmanual since I got the those files from another person.
Thanks for the answers
