Hey guys, haven't posted anything in a while because my computer got ravaged with virus and decided to dieeeee! But, finally, I'm up and running and able to work again.

Skip below the *** if you don't want to read lol:

So, having finished compulsory schooling, and doing some distance education, I now have alot more time in my day, thus I decided to *shock* abandon 3Ds Max, which worked in my favour considering my student license expired. Sooooo determined that I will get a job in the vfx industry someday, I decided to fork out the money for Maya 2008 Unlimted, which cost about the same as a prosumer video camera lol, but i think i've chosen my field.

Anyway, after a few weeks playing around in maya, learning on my own, I found I picked it up quite easily, and enjoyed it alot more than 3Ds Max. So I became part of a group animation project, making random models. You can find more information here if your interested: http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=166152

Then, when what I previously knew about Maya had dried up, I decided to invest in some video training. I purchased the Maya Fundamentals from 3DBuzz.com and set to work. The dvds are the results of an online school they had going, so you pretty much learn everything you would in a classroom sort of environment. There are 2 people narrating the videos the whole time, and it is pretty relaxed and fun. Honestly, you learn so much from these videos and they take you through pretty much everything in Maya and explain it in great detail, but its not too much that it will overwhelm beginners.

********************************************************

Anyways, the dvds (mentioned above) are broken up into 3 projects, so at the end of it, you will have 3 short animated films. The first, called the Talented Ball is below:

This project took me about 3 days working on it on and off, and about 20 minutes to render, so pretty good for a short animation I think.

Please leave any comments or thoughts. It seems that compression has made it darker in the final. I'll have a play around with the next short film and try to compensate for that.

I'm beginning work on the next short film today, which is of an alien space ship invading earth. Its supposed to be funny, and you'll see why when its finished lol.

Hope you enjoy :]

the only critique that came to mind isn't really a critique... kinda...

the curtains when they open and close look way too symmetrical, but that's just me... it doesn't look natural :D good stuffs though especially since you made it in 3 days on and off

Hey mate I'm a little confused....is the video cut off at the end? It appears to be about 4 seconds of a ball hopping onto a stool....so I don't get it :/

Tyson: first off, massive fan lol. Your forums and website have been a constant soure of knowledge and inspiration for me. To your question: no this is the full animation. lol I know its short, but it was just created to teach the basics of maya. I'm moving onto the next animation now, which is of an alien abduction, and it goes for about 40-50 seconds and is alot more interesting.

Timotheous: thank you for the suggestion. Once i've finished this course I think I might go back through all the projects and try new things, such as using ncloth for the curtains, and making more realistic materials and lighting for mental ray, rather then just maya software renderer.

Hehe thanks man glad you've found my tutorials helpful ;)

As for the animation....ah ok :)...just wasn't sure if I was missing a bigger picture. Hopefully people will find your training resources helpful as well! And thus the cycle continues...
