If you can model with NURBS and Subd's then you should have no problems modeling in polygons. (NURBS are a lot more complicated)
Actually polygons and subd's have almost identical workflow and tools, except for hierarchy levels.

There are a lot of tutorials and how-tos arround the net. The tools that maya provides for polygon modeling are really good (i've seen better though).

go to highend3d.com and see if there is anything there. I think you best bet is to get polygon modeling tutorials from whatever software (lightwave, max) and then try to emulate the steps they tell you with Maya's tools.

hope that helps

Cheers

yes i tend to agree with that maya's Polytools are weak ...
however i loved their NURBS and the way to work around them.

Well.... Maya's NURBS are one of the best impelemented NURBS i have ever used. I think AW Design studio's are stronger. Softimage NURBS are ok also.

NURBS are really cool for modeling certain objects, but you got to admit that they are a pain in the ass sometimes.

for poly modelling you can check out Mesmer's "Maya Illuminated for games" book. Its all about poly modelling.
