View Full Version : Modeling A Bird
Scandell 05-22-2003, 10:57 PM I would like to know what methods you folks would follow to model a bird. In other words, what is the most effective neutral pose? I need to rig this character to be fully animated..
What pose did they put Margalo (From Stuart Little) in when they modeled her? It seems like getting her to go from flight to stance would be very difficult. Please post pictures or drawings...etc. At what angle should her arms be set at?
I know that you guys have the knowledge out there...please help me out! I appreciate any help you can offer.
Thanks :bounce:

A blizzard entertainment Artist once gave an interview to www.max3d.com
it was on how they made the raven for WarCrafTIII. It gives u some good hints on how to make a realistic bird and on how to animate him. It gave me some good inspiration for the bird i´ve made(altought not very detailed cuz i only wanted it to give an envieremental feeling) but theirs is quite detailed if not the most of them all.
hope the interview is still up for u to view it

I am also working on a bird (a raven at that) and was very interested in the interview you mentioned. How long ago was it there? and did you happen to bookmark it; because their 'search' feature is "inactive" and so are other parts of their website. I can't find it and would be very happy to get my hands on that interview. Thanks!

The interview has been made in october 2000 and is no longer available :(
so if noone has it downloaded, you'll have to ask john chalfant himself how
he did the raven :)

Well if you get any positive reply, i'd be very glad to hear it too, since i have to make a fully detailed, textured, rigged and animated crow so it shouldn't be that far from that raven.
Anyway, if you find something out, post it here.

I would think modeling a bird with the wings fully extended would be the most logical starting position. Still I'm curious to see how it's done as well.
