View Full Version : modeling: Smoothing NURBS
holosynthetic 05-22-2003, 08:31 PM I can make a NURBS object in rhino and then export it out as a .igs file and then bring it into max 5 for render as a NURBS object, but when i render it out the edges are not perfectly smooth as i was led to believe NURBS do..so i went into the options and looked around and saw the tessalation menu and messed with that, while upping the tessalation in the options it looked good in the viewport..but stayed the same no matter what i did when i rendered it..how can i make the resolution look better on render?
thanks

What's-up Holo!
Post screen shot, dude. Can't help if we don't know what's up.
Also make sure that it's indeed a NURBS object in max...

heres a picture of a cup i made in rhino real quick to show what i mean
look at the sides, they are not perfectly round but have noticable flat hard edges, and it is in fact a NURBS object in max..any ideas?

after going back in i messed around some more under the surface options and what i found out is that the render option and the viewport option have two totally different settings..so i set the tesselation high under render settings and really low under viewport settings and the render was very smooth..learn something new everyday..very cool :)

Took one look at that render and knew it was your tesselation in your surface options...That one bit me in the butt way back...I'll never forget it...hehe.
Anyway, I'm glad it worked out for you. Learning Max is full of these little moments.
Thanks for joining my forums. We'll be providing some good content real soon. I just need more moderators and Max gurus before it all goes live.

i've having another problem, when i import more complex nurbs models some parts are missing when i import them in the .igs format
when in rhino the model is completely connected and nothing is left hangin

Are they really missing or could it be thet their normals are just flipped? Check by rendering with force 2-sided turned on, or in viewport config 2-sided.
You might want to try out powersolids for the Rhino-Max connection.

thanks i am downloading a demo of power translators tos ee if it does it right

it seems power translator does a worse job then simply import an igs file exported from rhino..an igs file from rhino is missing one surface..while power translator makes the model have 4 missing surfaces
there are certain things that dont translate well across the iges format, trims and patches can be problematic....its a trial and error thing im afraid...
my suggestion would be to work in nurbs in rhino as much as you can, max's nurbs are a bit of a joke to say the least...and it will also cut down in the amount of import/exporting needed with iges
