Title: Bookshelves at night
Name: Vincent Gendreau Thuaud
Country: Canada
Software: Maya, Photoshop

low-res (3216 Triangles).
No Final Gather no GI.
Rendered with maya software.

I wanted to give it a Game-type environment look a bit like the fallout game. With the condemned window and the old boxes on the shelves.
I alson wanted to prove you can get a nice atmosphere using the maya software renderer instead of using final gather and GI with mental ray.
I loved making the lighting by night time with the moonlight making fog through the window and the bulb light giving a hotter atmosphere.

There are a couple of things that may make the scene even more believable. First and foremost, you've modeled all the objects on the shelf, yet you used a decal for the door handle. The boards on the window seem just a little too thin, a bit more thickness might help here. Also, the light through the cracks add a nice touch, yet there is something odd about them. This is especially noticeable on the largest beam. It looks as though the beams are being generated in the room, not shining into the room from outside. Lastly, the shadow below the top shelf is 100%, yet towards the middle and bottom right shelves, the shadow is less than 100%. A less than 100% shadow seems more realistic in a place with lots of objects and shelves to bounce off of. On a last note, the scale of the objects on the shelf might use some tweaking. The Monopoly box seems especially out of proportion.

These things are mainly nitpicks of someone with a very critical eye, but I tend to voice things that I would say or would like someone to point out about my work for improvement down the road. This is an excellent start though.

Good model man!:buttrock:

I think the shelf needs a bit fixing, maybe some good texturing should do the trick.

thanks a lot for the comments, I'll try working on the black shadows and the shelves textures and proportions.
