I will wait for word on Lightwave 8 before I make a decision, however...after trying XSI 3.0 EXP, Lightwave feels, well, a few wavelengths slower than light. In doing the tutorials, the advantages of an integrated environment seem obvious, but I am concerned about possible disadvantages. One of the many things I like about Lightwave is the really reliable instancing system native to Lightwave workflow. I browse a couple XSI boards from time to time and my impression is that instancing in XSI is neither as reliable nor as flexible as in Lightwave...a showstopper for me. I am sorry I don't have time to test the XSI system myself. Can anyone who has used Lightwave in a production tell me if the instancing in XSI is on par? Thanks.

What sort of instancing are you asking about? There are 2 different types in instancing in XSI. Clone and Instance.

Sorry Ed, I am mixing up my 3D terminology. I meant the ability to swap an object or character out with another in a scene at any point in a production. Because Lightwave Layout merely references object files, it is very easy to replace an object with another. It allows me to tweak model topology and textures long after any animation has been approved.

You are talking about referencing. In the current version of XSI (3.0) it works very well if you know what to watch out for. In the next version (3.5) it has had most of, if not all of these problem spots smoothed out. From what I understand 3.5 is supposed to be out in the next couple of weeks.
