Heya Folks,

I'm at the stage of texturing this and want to get some feedback on the modelling and materials especially from arai, the code guardian folks and Skyraider3D if possible. I'm hoping to get it as photorealistic as possible so I can comp it in with some dv footage - Ideally black hawk down level of real. It was made from a set of plans I got with a really shit model kit so please excuse any inaccuracy. If anyone has a good set of jetranger or kiowa plans I'd appreciate them a lot.

looks very good so far! Perhaps a little bit too shiny, especially at the top?

Yeah you're right, I've been toying with the materials a bit and left the specular too high. Nearly all of these craft seem to have quite a dusty washed out look to them, it might be the light that they're always seen in or something like that. I'll bring down the spec and de-saturate the maps a bit I reckon. More renders tomorrow with more of the parts textured - I'm doing the flat bits first, I'll sort out the stretching on the nose and upper parts of the body last - anyone any thougts besides using a planar map on top and a mask to blend it into the side maps?

looks good so far. I'd say right now the things that stick out are too much specular and I think your bumpmaps are a little high. Its a good start though. This is where you have to start adding specific wear and tear.... find areas that are going to be stained by engine oil, or the paint bleached by high temperatures of exhaust etc. I stress getting to know the aircraft/heli that your making so you know where these types of wear/damage occur.

Some panels may have been painted at a earlier/later date and may be faded or not the exact same shade of green.

start laying out your unit markings and serial numbers. They break up objects really good as well.

look forward to updates

Cool thanks a million for that - I'll do some updates now with all those comments in mind. I'm not sure if I can find any more info on the jetranger - There aren't too many helicopter companies in ireland seeing as it's such a small country to travel within, I'll check on amazon and see can I find anything. Actually, I was looking at your render and rune spaans x-35 movie and I might use (soft or other) reflections rather than specular highlights. Is there any chance you could post some of your material settings or maps as a good example?

Thanks for al the help so far - much appreciated.

Okay - first update in a bit. I've worked on the textures quite a bit, adding in dirt and sunspots and general messing up all over. In all of the kiowa referenc pictures I have the panels are a uniform colour which is a bit odd. Other helis like the apaches and hueys nearly all have variations in hue and saturation from panel to panel. Anyway for some new pics. You'll see a bit of a **** up in the texturing on two of them where I'm layering maps to stop the texture stretching across the flat surfaces - I'll have this totally solved by tomorrow. Has anyone got any comments on the specularity / reflection / overall colour or anything about the model itself?

Top angle - bit of a **** up near the engine:

Side - Again a bit of a **** up near the top engine:

Render with different lighting and no top texture so you can see the non-****ed side but some smearing on the top bits:

why did you give yourself the task of texturing the blade
i mean isint it gonna turn?

Cos I'm really stupid :) - I was thinking about that but it only too a minute or two to do the maps from the other parts. I might crash it into something a la black hawk down so its handy to have the blades looking okay in case they come to a stand still.

But yeah you're right - if they were only turning there'd be no point in doing a texture aside from getting the white stripes at the end of the blades.

Thanks for the reply.

Another update with some of the material issues sorted, a few more bits to go and it's done. Thoughts?

Another update with all of the parts in there - This might be the final aside from a few minor touches - I should be getting some footage to track it into in the next few days
